“We are not married. It would be a sin to share a home with a man. If I worked for you, I would need my own apartment. My own life outside of this one.”

Now this is refreshing and so I decide to change direction as I discover the weakness in her argument.

“What if we were married, Purity? Would that change anything?”

“If we were married, Killian, you would control me, and I will never be happy with that.”

“Even if the marriage was a business arrangement and nothing more.”

“I don’t understand.” She is genuinely confused, and I lean back and say in a firm voice.

“We become husband and wife, as a contract. I need a wife to help me secure business and you want to travel, to explore and to live your best life. You will have all of that with me and more. I won’t curtail your freedom, but I will protect you from what that can mean. We live here and work together for our mutual benefit.”

“A business arrangement. Nothing more.”

I can tell she’s interested, and I nod.

“A partnership.”

“And you will pay me for that.”

I can sense her mind working hard and I nod. “The sum written on the paper stands. I will deposit it into your own bank account, and you will have full control over it. All I ask is for your help in accompanying me socially.”

“Is that it?”

She chews on her bottom lip and appears to contemplate my offer, and then she sighs heavily.

“It doesn’t seem right.”

“Why not?”

I lean forward. “It is no different to the married life you described back in Heaven. However, this time you are in charge.”

“Of you.” She appears a little excited by that and it makes me laugh.

“Ofyou, Purity. You decide. You are not required to cook, clean, bear my children, or bow to my wishes. This is business and nothing else. Now, do we have a deal?”

“I’ll need time to consider it.”

This time, I roll my eyes.

“You had time and look where that got you.”

“Exactly. I need time.”

It makes me smile.

“Then you have one hour, Purity.”

It makes her smile.

“May I sit here and consider it?”

“Of course.”

I stand.

“I will return in one hour’s time. Do you need anything before I leave?”
