“Because I’m here to serve you. I am not your friend.”

“Oh.” I’m a little annoyed about that, and his words make me feel even more alone. I have Killian, but it’s obvious he is a busy man and probably won’t be around much during the day. I wonder what I will do.

We head into his bedroom and James says respectfully, “Please call if you need anything, ma’am. I will arrange for some refreshment in the dining room when you are ready.”

“Thanks.” I smile, but it’s a little strained now because he has set the boundaries and pushed me firmly onto my side of the line.

I head straight for the second closet, on the other side of the bathroom that has two connecting doors. A ‘his and hers’ and I’m a little sad that even there we are separated. However, when I head into mine, I stare around in wonder because this is unexpected. When we left, this room was empty. Just bare rails and shelves and drawers with nothing in them.

I can’t say that now because it’s as if Killian ordered the entire store. The white interior is stuffed full of beautiful dresses, hanging on their rails, a tangible feast for my eyes. The shoes stand proudly on their slanting shelves and every type of purse stands proudly on glass fronted shelves.

There is a huge chandelier in the middle of the room, under which is a counter with a glass top, hiding gloves, belts and sparkling jewelry.

White fluffy rugs spill over the floor and the beautiful velvet chair set by the small table provides a comfortable place to sit.

This room is heaven and is in direct contrast to Killian’s masculine one a short distance away, where the walls creak with dark paneling and the suits hang lit by concealed lighting. His room smells of sandalwood, oud and musk. The leather from his shoes and belts making it a feast of masculinity that I inhaled with pleasure.

He was all around the room, and I suppose this is my own paradise.

I lift the nearest bottle of scent and spray a little on my neck. It smells divine and a shiver of pleasure passes through me. I’ve never owned anything before and now I have everything I could ever want. At least it feels that way.

For some reason, I fell into paradise when I ran from Heaven, and it’s all because of a chance meeting with the man who made it all happen. He offered me a job, rescued me when I turned him down and has made me his wife. I am the happiest woman alive, but I’m conscious I am missing a vital ingredient from what I ran to find. Friendship.

The way James put me in my place only reinforced my loneliness. I like Killian’s family, but they live so far away. I think about Gina, who was kind that night in the restroom. Maybe we could become friends. It’s a start at least.

I physically ache to hear a friendly voice and then I remember the phone the biker gave me when I left. I should call Faith. I want to hear her soft voice so badly, so with a feeling of pure relief, I head back to the guestroom to find my purse.

CHAPTER38

KILLIAN

Now my plan is in place, it’s back to business. Purity will be kept amused while I work and will accompany me to the various charity functions I have planned as the shining light on my arm.

This weekend we attend our marriage celebration that will announce us on the social scene as the new power couple in town and all our enemies have been invited. I will not hide from them. I will ruin them, and I will do it by hiding behind a polite smile as I establish myself as the most important man in town.

Purity will do what she does best. Deflect any attention away from me because when she is in a room, everyone turns to stare. Her beauty and innocence are captivating. Her sweet smile and warm personality a dangerous drug that hooks you before you realize it.

She will give me the information I need as she weaves her magic spell over the women of this town. I will encourage her to spill their secrets, using that information to destroy their men, and she won’t even guess she is working for me. Her excited chatter will be released with a few pointed questions. I will drop my requirements into the conversation that she will unconsciously use against my enemies.

Information is what I seek, and she will be starving for it. Purity is naturally curious and won’t even realize I am manipulating her friendships for my own gain.

It will take time, I realize that, but Rome wasn’t built in a day as they say and I am playing the long game, which is why I needed to marry my accomplice. Yes, Purity Sanders will soon become my most valuable asset as I use her to destroy the lives of the men who want to take my birth-right away from me.

I head to my den with Saint and as we settle into our usual roles, I hand him the glass of whiskey we enjoy as we ponder our problems. Most of our time is spent running over the business. Checking everything is running smoothly and dealing with any problems as they arise. It’s exhausting and keeps us working long into the night. It’s necessary because when you balance good and evil, it’s important to keep them separated.

During the day, I take care of my legitimate business. Gold Hawk Enterprises, where I acquire failing businesses and tear them apart for profit.

At night, my attention turns to where the real money and power lie. My casinos, drugs operations, and prostitution. Mrs. Collins and her mansion are owned by me. She pays me a huge slice of her profits, which are considerable. I have many others around the state, not to mention the bars, the clubs and the protection services we offer. I run them all with an iron fist, keeping a watchful eye on my managers and employees.

My network of spies is immeasurable, and it takes a well-oiled machine to run effectively. Any failings in that machine are dealt with speedily and with no emotion if they threaten my business. Gabriella angered me when she allowed the legitimate part of my business to be compromised by the illegal one. She was careless and paid a heavy price.

However, business is suffocating me right now as I pull out the leather folder and slide the photographs out one by one. This is now the most important thing on my list because it threatens everything we have worked so god-damned hard for.

Saint sighs heavily. “What’s the plan?”

“We set up a meeting.”

He raises his eyes and I say irritably, “We go ahead with my marriage celebration as arranged. I have no doubt he will approach me then. I will arrange the meeting at Gold Hawk, and we deal with the traitor by staging an unfortunate accident as he leaves.”
