The music starts and Purity stares in wonder, her eyes shining.

“I love this, Killian.” She smiles with joy at the lights glittering across the dance floor.

“Then allow me.” I kiss her cheek and pull her into my arms and guide her across the dance floor while the guests look on.

“It’s like I’m Cinderella.” She whispers in my ear and her soft breath washes over me like a summer breeze. She feels so good in my arms. As light as a feather and knowing she is naked under the soft fabric is making concentration extremely difficult.

I can’t help myself and taste her lips, deepening the kiss as we twirl around the dance floor in a slow and steady rhythm. It’s almost sexual because as her body moves against mine, it turns me on knowing that she is all mine and has never been with any man before. Nobody has touched my treasure, and that gives me a surge of power that I drown in.

She makes me powerful, able to move mountains and nonna’s words come back to haunt me.

“Open your heart, Killian. Let emotion inside and stop trying to control every aspect of your life, emotions included. Only then will you be as powerful as your grandfather, because without love or emotion, you are weak.”

It shocks me that her words have hit home because, for the first time in my tortured life, I am terrified of losing something. Good things never last — not in my world. They are fleeting like a rainbow on a showery day, or a wave breaking to shore. It makes me hold on tighter out of fear of losing something so pure it has burned a hole that could never be repaired if it did.

For the first time in my life, I am scared, and I don’t fucking like it.

CHAPTER43

PURITY

Iam the princess in a movie, and my leading man is hot. So hot he burns with one smoldering glance in my direction and the slide of his hard body against mine. I can’t look anywhere but into his eyes as he spins me around the dance floor, commanding all my attention and shutting the entire room out.

We are the only ones here. At least it feels like that as we dance to the music, his expert guidance preventing me from making a fool of myself. I wasn’t kidding when I told him I was naked underneath this dress. I loved the slide of the silk fabric against my skin too much to place any barriers in the way of that.

However, now I’m regretting it because this could be extremely embarrassing if the wet heat between my legs connects with the fabric. Killian would probably love that. Knowing I am dripping for him. I always am though. There is something so intoxicating between us.

There was the moment he turned in the reception at Gold Hawk Enterprises and our eyes locked. It was right at that moment I felt it. A connection that had my heart racing and my senses screaming. It was as if our worlds collided in that split second, telling me my life would never be the same again.

The song ends, but we don’t stop dancing. The next one begins, and Killian is in no hurry to return to his guests.

It’s only when I see a man approaching that the atmosphere changes and Killian’s mood changes in a heartbeat. He is tense, his mood evaporating quicker than ice in the desert.

I stare at the man and note the similarities immediately, and the low growl from my husband alerts me that this will not go well for the man heading our way.

He stops and pulls me to his side as the man moves closer and almost tucks me behind him as if he is protecting me somehow.

“What do you want?” He says in a low voice and the man smirks. “Is that any way to greet your father, Killian? Show some respect.”

We have moved to the edge of the dance floor, and I note the curiosity of our guests as they watch.

“You earn respect and when a child grows up and learns his father isn’t worthy of any, you forfeit the right to demand it.”

An angry scowl appears on his father’s face for a fleeting second, before he replaces it with an easy laugh and gazes in my direction.

“Welcome to the family, honey. I could wish you a long and happy life together, but sadly, it’s never going to happen.”

I stare with growing unease as the two men glare at one another and then a soft voice says to my left, “Purity. It’s so good to see you again.”

I turn and smile with relief as Gina stands beside us, along with Jefferson Stevenson, her boyfriend. At last, a familiar face and I smile with relief.

“It’s good to see you, Gina, Jefferson.”

Killian grips my hand tighter as Gina says smoothly, “Allow me to steal a dance with the bridegroom.”

She winks at me and whispers, “You appear to need saving.”

She nods in Killian’s father’s direction, and I smile, grateful for the intervention.
