“Catty bitches.” Cass snickered. “They’re not focused on getting a degree. Their goal is to land a husband with the potential for fame and wealth.”

Riley pressed her finger hard enough on Jillian’s chest to make the brunette flinch. “Back off, or I’ll talk to the athletic teams about what I witnessed you do to another girl.”

Jillian smirked. “I didn’t do anything.”

“Really? Pushing a pregnant girl who happens to be dating the star quarterback? Yeah, that’s not going to go over with any of the football guys. You’ll lose your chance with all of them.”

“Doubtful.” Tracey looked bored. “Come on, Jillian. We have better things to do than listen to their pathetic threats.”

“Heard Shane’s done with you”—Cass laughed—“again.”

Tracey’s light skin flamed red, and she whirled and stormed off, leaving Jillian behind. Jillian’s mouth dropped open, then she quickly followed.

Riley turned, a big grin on her stunning face. “That was too fun.”

“Thanks, Riley.” But a part of me was annoyed. I wanted a fight, and going toe-to-toe with Jillian would have helped me to let some aggression out.

“Yeah.” Riley’s gaze skated to Cass, who dropped her arm from holding me back. “Except something tells me you don’t mean that.”

I’d always liked those two. We’d met over the summer at the cove, and I’d gotten to know them a little better then, including some of Riley’s rough start with Cole. They were straight shooters and obviously had each other’s backs. Maybe I was in their inner circle, too, since they’d taken on my battle and made it theirs.

Riley and Cass were waiting for an answer, and the rage sizzled to a slow burn. “Too many emotions. One minute, I’m exhausted then sex-crazed, crying, or quick to anger. I can’t keep up with my fluctuating moods.”

They both laughed before Cass gave me a quick squeeze. “I don’t envy you that, but I bet Phoenix is loving at least one part of that equation.”

I rolled my eyes. “Nope. All we seem to do is fight.”

Riley shrugged. “Phoenix is complicated. But he’s a safe bet if you want to sleep with him. I say go for it. I know it takes two to get pregnant, but you already are. Why not enjoy the benefits of not worrying?”

“Because he drives me crazy.” My face flushed. Are we talking about me using him for sex?

“Makes for hot sex.” Cass beamed. “I vote go for it.”

“And on that note”—Riley glanced at the time on her phone—“I’ve got to get to class. Are you going to the game tomorrow?”

“Maybe? I should be off tomorrow.” I had to work later, and one of the other waitresses had been asking around to see if somebody could take her shift tomorrow. I was so tired these days that I hadn’t committed.

“If you do go, text me.” Riley took another few steps back, and Cass followed. “You need to sit with us. We’ll have great seats.”

I agreed to let her know then turned toward the dorms. With the job, I would be able to stay this semester. I had enough to get by, barely. But I wouldn’t be able to swing it next semester, not with how expensive the dorms and meal plan were.

My phone rang, and when I pulled it out of my pocket, I felt relief when my sister’s name lit up the screen. “Hey, Regan.”

“Hey, sis. Guess what? Dane and I are coming to the football game tomorrow. You need to go with us, and I want to see who your baby daddy is.”

“He’s not that great.”

“Whatever. We’re coming anyway.”

A wave of longing hit. I missed my sister like crazy, which sealed it—I was going. I made plans with her to meet at my dorm tomorrow, and we would head over together. Maybe I would call Riley after all and see if she could get seats for my sis and her boyfriend too. It was worth a shot. I didn’t think I could handle nosebleed seats, which were probably all that would be left. I’d heard the game was supposed to be sold out or near to it with the rumor that Phoenix would start. I doubted it was true because I’d also heard they had a starting quarterback already.

“Aspen?”

“Yeah?” I glanced in the direction of the deep voice way too like Phoenix’s. Ahh, that was why—the gorgeous, broody guy was his brother, Shane. They looked similar but also nothing alike. Where Phoenix had blond hair, silvery blue eyes, and a lean but powerful and athletic build, Shane was the opposite. He was equally athletic but stacked with muscle, giving him a much wider span. He had dark hair and blue eyes, and I couldn’t help but wonder who they took after in their family.

“Little piece of advice.” Shane stayed where he was, not moving any closer to whatever bomb he planned to drop. “Don’t bother with my brother, kid or not. He’s not the marrying kind.”

Seriously? What an asshole.I barely refrained from giving him the finger. “Good thing I’m not either.”
