“Then she’s into you. But I can see her job being a problem.”

Ridge jumps in, “You said you haven’t met her yet. How do you know?”

“I can’t explain it. I just feel like she’s different than any girl I’ve ever met.”

Never before has texting someone given me such delight, knowing that the woman typing those words might just be the woman I’ve been waiting to meet. The one who has goals, appreciates the simple things in life, and doesn’t care that I’m famous. The one who gets my blood pumping as soon as I see her picture.

“This is good,” Kelly says. “It’s the first time I feel like you can say you’re honestly over what happened with Maxine. Genuine interest in another woman is a big step.”

“Yeah, man. We were all a little worried about you,” Ridge says. “Remember when after you and Maxine broke up and you had hundreds of girls mail you letters? And some girls even threw bras with their phone numbers written in them over the front gates of your house? You didn’t even look at them. We seriously talked as a group about having an intervention.”

“I know I was at an all-time low, but that seems a bit drastic. I loved Maxine and it takes time to bounce back from something like that.”

Ridge transitions before we have a debate. “You know, Oliver took some of those letters.”

“Some of the bras, too,” Kelly says.

“He definitely made a few phone calls,” Ridge says.

“And look where that got him. Nowhere. He’s still single,” I say.

“But now you have a girl you’re interested in,” Kelly says, circling back to the reason for this call.

“Definitely interested. Now what do I do?”

I rest my head in my hands and put the phone on speaker. I’m really hoping they give me advice I can use. I’ve been out of the game for so long and I don’t want to do anything to mess up my chance with Cailin. It’s important that I strategize. The player is retired. I’ve quit playing games. My heart is open, as long as she’ll love me.

“I say wait until you meet her in person and see if you even like her. This might just be a new fascination or something. Like you realized you want to get back out there and she’s the first girl you’ve met.” I see what Ridge means, but that’s not the case.

“I’m telling you, the reason I want to get back out there is because of Cailin.”

Kelly jumps in to offer a mega romantic outlook. “This is really sweet. Listen, Jax. If this girl woke you from your deep slump and you think she’s something special, then you must pursue her. This is like running down the streets to catch a cab and high-tailing it to the airport before her plane takes off kind of stuff. You can’t let this go. You’ll regret not trying.”

“You’re right, Kelly. I can’t let her go before I even have a chance. I deserve to give this a shot.”

I thank Kelly and Ridge for their advice and hang up knowing exactly what I need to do. I might not be in the situation where I have to chase Cailin down at the airport to stop her from leaving. However, she’s flying into LA very soon and I can make a grand gesture to let her know my intentions.

JAX SLATER SWEEPS CAILIN MCCALL OFF HER FEET WITH SURPRISE GESTURE

CAILIN

If love isall around airports like that hit movie claims, it seems to have missed Los Angeles. Or at least me. I could really use some love right now. Cupid, where are you? Hit me with your best shot. Spike that arrow with some magical beauty elixir. Cailin at 5 a.m. after an overnight flight is a sight for sore eyes. And I feel just as bad as I’m guessing I look.

The tour starts in LA, which is where Jax currently resides, so everyone who isn’t local had to fly into town. I roll my suitcase down the long airport hallway and look for the nearest bathroom. I need to do something with myself before I meet Jax for the first time in person, and I’m really wishing I prepared a little more for such a major milestone. I try taking my hair out of the bun, but that doesn’t help. My hair is dented in all the wrong places. Back up it goes. I use the bathroom and swish some mouthwash. Now my mouth is as fresh as my mind.

After I wash my hands and apply an organic coconut and vanilla scented hand lotion, I pull out my makeup bag and quickly apply cream-based blush on the apples of my cheeks for a natural dewy ‘I didn’t try too hard’ look. A few swipes of mascara, puffs of powder, and a slick of clear lip gloss later, I feel almost human. This will have to do.

I head out to the airport exit and look for the person from my car service reservation. To my surprise, when I arrive, there are two men holding signs with my name on them.
