“Is this really happening?”

“Oh, it’s happening,” Jax says. “Tonight, after I do this interview, the whole world is going to know that I love you.”

The whole world. Those words ring in my head as I nuzzle my face against the man who has the potential to be mine forever, or crack my heart open and be documented as my biggest mistake. Things seem too easy, too perfect, and I can’t help but wait for my wake-up call.

INSIDERS SPECULATE BREAKUP IS COMING ON JAX SLATER TOUR

JAX

I can’t shakethe feeling that something is bothering Cailin. When I told her that after my interview tonight the world would know I love her, I’m pretty sure I felt her shoulders tense. Revealing that I’m in love will be positive for me, but I know this is all new territory for Cailin. She’s going to have to deal with a lot of change in her life. That’s why this interview I’m going to do will be the most important conversation of my life.

Since Cailin stopped to chat with Hayley, I had some time alone in the hotel room. By the time Cailin arrives back to the room, I’m standing in my towel. I see her reflection sneak up behind me as I wipe steam off the mirror.

“Your shower was way too quick. Why don’t you join me and we can make sure you didn’t miss any spots?”

With that, Cailin drops my towel and I’m at her mercy. I draw her to me and start removing her clothes before we step into the tub.

Every time I think we’re done, we go another round. Neither one of us is ready for this session to end. But finally, I can’t take it anymore. I give in to Cailin’s demands that I do the interview in private. She says that she doesn’t want her presence to influence my responses. I argue that there’s nothing I’m going to say that I wouldn’t want her to hear—I want her to know everything. But she insists that there’s a conflict since she’s not just my publicist, but also the focus of this interview, so she shouldn’t be in the room when I discuss our relationship. I think she’s just nervous, but I agree to do the interview alone while she goes to catch up with Haley.

Ultimately, it’s probably better that Cailin isn’t here right now to see me sweat. Turns out, I’m the one who is carefully crafting each sentence that comes out of my mouth. I feel like I’m having to defend Cailin, and I don’t really like where this conversation is going, so I need to redirect the reporter.

“It does put her in a compromising situation with her job and we have talked about that in-depth,” I tell the reporter. “She is lucky to have the support of her team and it’s really important to me that she is portrayed in a positive light in this story. Make it clear that this is not some arrangement for publicity or to enhance her career. This is something unexpected that happened and we really are only focused on growing our relationship. I hope we can have everyone’s support.”

This reporter is digging deep into everything, trying to find the drama. But I am going to stand up for Cailin like she deserves. Next, the reporter asks me why Cailin is the one who got me to ‘settle down again’ instead of going back to my womanizing ways.

“I love how she doesn’t let life knock her down,” I say. “She’s fierce in pursuit of her dreams and has goals. She doesn’t care about being in the spotlight, but she doesn’t mind that my life is in the public eye. She appreciates the little things in life. And she sees me beyond my career. But most importantly, I don’t want to spend a day without her now that I have her in my life.”

My mind drifts to all the things I love about this woman. I savor the moment each time she snuggles up against me. I love the way she still blushes when she gets nervous. Heck, I think it’s cute that I still make her a little nervous. I notice how she bites her lip when she’s deep in thought. And how her nail polish is perfectly painted or completely removed, but never chipped. I adore her at night when she gets changed and takes out her contacts. She has a new sexiness to her when she wears her wide-framed black glasses. I love how she leans against me and reads a book while I strum the guitar. But I keep that to myself.

Jax wanted me to stay with him while he did the interview, but I wanted to give him his privacy. The last thing he needs is to feel that because I’m his publicist and his girlfriend, that I’ll always be lingering around during interviews. He needs to know that I trust him and I’m not going to micro-manage his interviews. Besides, I’ve been wanting to check in with Hayley and also have to tell her that she can have our hotel room to herself.

“You’re the best,” Hayley says. “I can totally use a bath to just sit and think about my life. I miss baths.”

“I thought you might like the time with Jayce, too.”

“It will be good to have some alone time with him, I agree.” Hayley’s mood has shifted since we first met. There is definitely trouble in paradise. I don’t like seeing my friend so bummed. I need to think of something to cheer her up.

“How about tonight we all do dinner? Definitely the four of us, and anyone else who wants to tag along is welcome. I’m sure Jax won’t mind. He just has an interview to do.”

Her frown turns upwards. “That could be fun. I’ll check to see what’s around here. Let me know what time Jax can be ready.”

“Perfect,” I tell Hayley before I let her go enjoy her bath.

While I have some time to myself, I decide to call my mom and Gemma and update them on what’s going on. Gemma is over the moon jealous. My mom is happy for me, but also being cautious because she’s afraid my heart might get broken. However, that is not going to stop her from bragging to all her friends, and she asked when the magazine cover with Jax will hit newsstands so she can make sure she’s first to get one.
