He notices the pensive look on my face and motions to return the massage. “Hey, if this is your dream job, then we can work around it.”

“I don’t know if it’s my dream job. Working with you is a dream. But I don’t think I want to tour with other bands. I don’t want to leave you, especially right away. This job, like I said before, just fell into my lap at a time when I needed it.”

“You’re always talking about manifesting and the universe and fate. Maybe this job was just supposed to lead you to me.”

“And now I found you and I can just move on? That would be nice, but I have bills to pay and an apartment I just bought. I need to have a plan, I guess. Not to mention, I just went public as a music publicist. What does that say about me if I quit after the tour?”

“Who cares what they think? Do you know how much criticism I’ve had to deal with in my life? You just have to do what’s best for you. Do what you want and what makes you happy. You can’t live your life for others.”

“You’re right,” I say.

“You’ll figure it out and I’ll support you. Literally, you can quit your job and move in with me. Sell your place.”

“I really appreciate that, but I can’t rely on you. I need to pave my own way, alongside you.”

“What about coming to spend time with me in LA after the tour? You can still work remotely, right?”

“I can.” Jax’s hands feel so amazing on me that I would agree to just about anything.

“Are you worried about something?”

“No, I just set up my whole apartment and I’m proud that I did it on my own.” I thought I would have more time to discover myself as a single woman before I found love again. But I don’t mind that I skipped a few steps.

“I can come stay with you.” He wraps his arms around me from behind and hugs my back to his chest.

“Jax, you would not survive in small town USA.”

“Why not? I wasn’t born into luxury. I have humble roots just like you. I actually prefer the simple life.”

“Well, for one thing, you’re used to living in a palace by the beach and this is a small one bedroom condo. No at-home gym or pool.”

“You have a lake, right?”

“Yes, but what happens during the winter months?”

“I’m trying to find solutions for us. I’m sure your local sports gym has a pool. Are you trying to find excuses that this won’t work?”

“No, not at all. I’m just worried my world isn’t good enough for what you’re used to every day.” I trail off realizing how silly that sounds. “But I know I’m wrong because all I’ve learned about you is that you are not the stereotypical pop star. And I think we will have an amazing time wherever we are, together.”

“We don’t have to solve anything right now,” Jax says. He moves next to me and I lean my head on his shoulder. We sit in silence for the remainder of the ride.

Hayleyand I push through the crowded club to make our way to the women’s restroom. Our crew is hooked up in the VIP area, but we still have to trek to the bathrooms. The floor is sticky from spilled drinks and there’s a distinct smell of sweat drifting across the dance floor. I’m pretty sure some guy grazed my backside on purpose as I walk past him and his friend, even though he apologizes over the roar of the music.

“I don’t actually have to pee,” Hayley says.

“You mean I just walked all this way in heels for nothing?” What form of unnecessary torture is this?
