“Just offering up my services. Take ’em or leave ’em.”

Hayley and Jayce look at each other as if they are seriously considering the offer. I wish I could pull her aside to share some words of wisdom. She was just talking about her uncertainty towards getting engaged a few minutes ago. She can’t rush into a marriage. It would be a mistake. But instead, I shoot her a supportive glance, letting her know I am there for her no matter what. Sometimes, we need to make our own mistakes. It’s the only way to move forward to where we belong.

“I mean, I’ll do it if you want to.” Jayce looks to Hayley for the final decision.

Hayley twists the ring on her finger, contemplating this major life decision for a total of five seconds. “Let’s do it.”

I look at Jax, who knows nothing about what’s really going on, and is thoroughly enjoying the spectacle happening before him. Hayley’s going to get married wearing a black T-shirt that says Fearless, and ripped black jeans. How romantic. At least Jayce’s all black outfit completes the color scheme.

“We don’t have rings.” I point it out to buy Hayley some time. She doesn’t pick up what I’m throwing down.

“We don’t need them,” Hayley says. “We can get matching tattoos tomorrow. I’ll check the reviews of the best artists in the area.”

“Oh, great idea,” I mutter under my breath. “At least let me give you something borrowed.” I take my ivory knotted hairband off and place it on her head.

“Thank you, it’s perfect.”

“Okay, gather round,” Chris says. The live DJ finally paused for a break. “No need to drag things out. Jayce, you love Hayley. Do you want her to be your wife?”

Jayce and Hayley stand across from each other, holding hands. Jayce drops his hand to take a swig of beer and then promptly brings his hand back together with Hayley’s. He doesn’t notice her roll her eyes. “Yeah, I do,” Jayce says.

“Hayley, do you take Jayce to be your husband?”

Hayley pauses for a second and looks at me, before saying, “Yes, I do.”

“Then I now pronounce you husband and wife. We’ll fill out the paperwork tomorrow morning. You can make out while we watch.” Chris takes a bow.

Jayce and Hayley seal the deal while everyone claps. Jax pulls me in for a kiss. This wedding may not be my version of perfect, but it does seem pretty perfect for Hayley and Jayce. If she’s gonna walk on sunshine from now on, then that’s all that matters. I grab my phone and snap a few photos for the newlyweds. No matter how this turns out, the event deserves to be documented.

Jayce and Hayley head off to the bar and the rest of the crew disperse across the dance floor, presumably looking to fish for their hookups for the night.

“You want to get out of here?” Jax asks me.

“Is it rude to leave a wedding reception before cake?”

“Being that there’s no cake, I’d say no.” Jax pulls me towards the door. We get outside and breathe in the cool summer night. A crescent moon shines down from the sky, illuminating a few stars. Jax notices the goosebumps on my shoulders and puts his arms around me as we walk down the dimly lit street.

“That was interesting,” he says.

“Very rock ‘n’ roll.” I don’t want to comment any further because I’m not sure I should mention how I feel about Hayley’s choice. I’m not one to judge others. But having recently come out of a divorce and hearing the stories of others in my support group, I want to help a friend who might be getting married for the wrong reason.

“Do you know something I don’t know?” Jax is onto me.

“I just hope they aren’t rushing into it, that’s all. Between you and me, Hayley was having her doubts earlier this week. She gave Jayce an ultimatum and that’s when he proposed.” I bite my lower lip, not able to hold in my worry.

Adding a guy’s perspective, Jax says, “Maybe he needed that wake-up call. That he didn’t want to lose the most important thing in his life.”

“Maybe. I hope so.”

“Sometimes when you know, you just know. And then what’s the sense of waiting?”

I get the sense Jax is talking about us. I definitely know how I feel about Jax and that equally thrills and terrifies me. I remind myself that there doesn’t have to be drama with every relationship. I can accept something good in my life because that’s what I deserve. Hell, I manifested it. And I’m going to enjoy every second.

Jax pulls out his phone and makes a call to Harry, who stayed back tonight to go to dinner with some friends he had in town. “Book a private jet. Cailin and I are gonna fly to the next show.”

“What?” I ask in dismay as Jax hangs up the phone.

“I promised to spoil you with surprises. If you can’t take off work to go on vacation with me, then we’re going to turn our everyday life into adventures.”
