“Send me the paperwork, I’m adopting her with you. I love this dog. She’s coming with us. We can’t leave her behind.”

“I think Hope would be honored to have you as her dad. I guess that would make us dog parents.” Her cheeks turn pink.

“Look at that. I can still make you blush.”

“I’m not blushing.”

I give her a look.

“Okay, fine. You win. Again.”

“So now that we have that settled, I was also thinking that when we’re in LA we can pack up my stuff. I want to put my house on the market. I never liked it and LA really isn’t my speed. I still want to make music and explore other possibilities. But I can do that anywhere really, and travel when necessary. We can both take the time to figure out what’s next for our careers, together. But there’s one catch. I think you should sell your apartment, too.” I hold my breath and wait to see how she will react.

“Sell my apartment?”

“I already told you that you have to want for nothing financially and I will support you. But I know you are also stubborn and want to be able to support yourself. Also, Hope needs a yard and I need space for my music equipment and home gym. Wherever we land, it’s not going to be your apartment. You can sell it and use the money until you figure out what you really want to pursue.”

“That’s actually a really good idea.”

Well, that surprised me.

BFF DREAMS COME TRUE! CAILIN AND GEMMA MEET THEIR FAVE BOY BAND!

JAX

As Cailinand I board my jet, I have a brief flashback to her running off not too long ago. But I brush that image out of my mind and focus on coaxing Hope. She’s a bit apprehensive about the plane. Since treats aren’t doing the trick, I swoop down, wrap her in a protective hold, and carry her to our seating area.

“You’re such a good dog dad,” Cailin says.

Over the past few weeks staying with Cailin in her hometown, we’ve gotten a taste of reality. Overall, things went rather smoothly, considering this is our first time cohabiting and adjusting to our relationship in a normal environment. We spent a lot of time getting to know each other on a less accelerated level since we were no longer sneaking around or rushing to squeeze in moments together in-between tour responsibilities.

We savored everyday things, like cooking meals together. Cailin learned that she’ll be taking on most of the duties in the kitchen after I burned pancakes. Luckily, the smoke alarms didn’t blare. But we did end up leaving and going to a café for breakfast that morning.

Going out in a small town where Cailin knows everyone is a lot different than going out in LA or on tour. The locals are respectful of our privacy, but are also very friendly and always come over to greet Cailin and introduce themselves to me. I’ve come to form my own camaraderie with the baristas, who have our order ready within minutes of our arrival.

I haven’t seen that guy Ethan, which is lucky for him. Apparently, he went out of town on business. He timed that perfectly to avoid the shame of what he did to me and Cailin, I’m sure. But he’ll be served with papers from my lawyer as soon as he gets home. With Ethan gone and no paparazzi present, I haven’t felt the need to look over my shoulder. Since I’ve had Cailin by my side on tour, I’ve gotten used to going out in public again and that original worry I agonized over subsided. I feel joy and freedom, a lot due to Cailin’s support and encouragement.

All of this is true, but that’s not to say there haven’t been a few bumps along the way. We’ve discovered new quirks about each other that we’ve had to learn to navigate. Cailin gets annoyed when the cap is left off the toothpaste. Living solo for so long, I never had to worry about little things.

Despite Cailin insisting we keep the dog leash in a closet instead of close to the door, where we have quick access, it’s easy for us to share a roof. We’ve lived in close quarters on the bus, and now have a little more space to spread out in the apartment. But we need more square footage to grow, not only in our relationship, but to attain our personal goals.

“My mom is so excited to meet you.”

“I hope she breaks out the baby albums,” Cailin says.

“I don’t doubt that she will, actually. Good thing you’ve already seen my bare butt.”
