Cailin wipes her runny nose and sniffles. This is not how I planned our first day in LA going, but then again, some of the best things in life are spur of the moment. I get down on one knee in front of Cailin and grab her hand.

“Marry me.”

CAILIN

Somehow my near nervous breakdown led to Jax asking me to be his wife. Obviously, I want to marry him. But I need to know he is seriously prepared to propose.

“Jax,” I say.

“Shh… Just listen.”

I oblige.

“The first day I met you in person, we were standing right here. As soon as I touched you, I felt electricity. In just those few minutes of hugging you, this big empty foyer felt like home for the first time. Because I had someone in it that I wanted to share my blessings with. I knew right then that you were someone special.”

“I felt it too,” I say.

“And now we’re back to where things began between us. We made it through an accident, a tour, publicity scandals, even burned pancakes. We’re still standing by each other’s side. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be and I bet you feel the same.”

I simply nod my head.

“When you called me from the airport and asked about getting in the car with my driver, I told you to take a leap of faith. You did. And look at the journey it led us on. Now, I’m asking you to take another leap into the unknown, where the only thing that is certain is I will be by your side with whatever comes our way.”

By now, I realize that Jax actually means this. Either he has prepared this speech or he is insanely good at professing his feelings on the fly. No matter which it is, he has my attention.

“Wait right here,” Jax says.

A minute later, he’s back on his knees in front of me.

“Will you marry me?”

This is really happening. There’s a round solitaire diamond ring in the box. How did he have time to go shopping for a ring?

“This is the part where you say, ‘yes,’” Jax nudges.

“Yes! Yes!” I say. “Yes, Jax, I will marry you.” I loved him then, as the guy whose face on my wall taught me to dream for big love. I love him now, as the man who has shown me what real love is and has helped me grow as an individual. I will love him always, as my partner through the ups and downs of life. I seal my commitment with a kiss as Jax stands up and slides the ring on my finger. It’s a little snug, but we get it past my knuckle.

“This was my grandmother’s. My grandfather gave it to her. My mom showed me when we were visiting the house and I asked her if I could have it. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to give it to you, because I want you to have a ring you love. We can still pick one out together, but at least consider this a place holder.”

“I love it. I can’t believe you thought to pass on your grandma’s ring.”

“I hope to keep it in our family, and pass it down to our kids one day. Let the legacy of love continue for generations.”

“Stop it or you’re going to make me cry again.”

“No more tears caused by me from here on out, only happy ones.” Jax wipes my eyes.

“This means we’re engaged. Like Jax Slater is off the market.”

“Jax Slater and Cailin McCall are both off the market. Don’t underestimate yourself—everyone knows you’re a catch.”

“So, I guess eventually we’ll have to make an announcement,” I say.

“That we will. Do you happen to know a good publicist?”
