She didn’t answer right away, a crease deepening between her brows. “I don’t know.”

I didn’t continue with any other questions. Ryder’s men didn’t need to know anything more about us than they had to. All that mattered was that they were offering us refuge in a House that was as volatile as a homemade bomb.

For now, that was good enough.

Chapter14

KINSLEY

We were taken to a small house with dark-green siding and cream trim. There was a small porch out front that looked like a nice place to relax until I noticed the scorch marks and bullet holes in the chairs that were sitting next to the door.

Right. We were in somewhat of a warzone. Just because we’d made it inside Fire and Fluorite safely didn’t mean that we would stay that way.

More importantly, something within me was off. I was freaking out at first, but the longer we were within the House, the more the stirring inside me seemed familiar.

I had no idea why since I’d been trapped at my coven for nearly three decades, never even venturing through Earth and Emerald, because I didn’t have a House ring.

Nowhere should have been familiar to me. Yet…this desolate place was. Like the home I’d always hoped for. Somewhere I could truly belong.

Drake opened the front door and stayed outside as we passed by him. “Ryder will come see you whenever he has time. There’s food inside, along with three bedrooms. If you leave this house, you leave behind the protection you’ve been temporarily offered.”

The unspoken threat was clear. They’d possibly be the ones to kill us if we did anything besides what we’d been told.

I expected Grayson to disagree with that, but he stayed quiet and shut the door.

Given how off-kilter I was feeling, I headed for the kitchen and opened the fridge. There wasn’t much there besides condiments and drinks. Inside the freezer were icy-looking corndogs.Fuck.

I checked the cabinets and groaned. “So much for the food he mentioned.”

“You won’t die from whatever’s there,” Lia said from the couch.

I raised a brow and peeked around the corner at her. “How do you know?”

“I can still sense your future,” she said nonchalantly.

Super. So I could maybe get sick, but I would still live.

Whatever. I was fucking ravenous and needed more than the snacks we’d had in the jeep during the drive here.

I grabbed two of the corndogs and popped them into the microwave. I pressed a few buttons and was thankful the house was at least magically charged with electricity. We didn’t have to worry about not being able to use things like lights and water since power companies weren’t a thing anymore.

Grayson came into the kitchen. His eyes were on me, and I shivered from the depths of their darkness. I should have been afraid of what I saw there, but instead, I wanted nothing more than to lose myself with him.

Insane, I knew, but it was the truth, and I wasn’t going to bother denying it.

I walked toward him, fully expecting him to move away or stop me somehow, but he didn’t. I pressed my palms over his chest, and his heart was hammering beneath my touch.

Yeah. The fucker could tell me all he wanted that he didn’t want me, but I knew that was utter bullshit.

If only I knew more about what I was doing besides what I’d read in books.

“What’s wrong with you?” he asked through gritted teeth as I stared up at him.

Being near him had taken away my previous unease, but his question had the foreign feeling rising to the surface again.

I pointed to my chest. “Something feels off here. Not like wrong or bad, just different. Is that a wolf thing?”

His hand raised, and he hesitated to touch me, but then he finally caved as he pushed aside my new necklace without commenting on the gift. His heated skin felt like it was burning through my tank top and scorching my chest.
