I heard the door creak behind us, and Ryder was back inside the warehouse. “Here’s your first test.”

He closed the door, and I noticed there wasn’t a handle on the outside of the door to get back in.

“That fucker,” I muttered, then grabbed Kinsley’s hand. “You better be acquainted enough with your wolf.”

Her body stiffened, but she nodded and turned away from me, watching our surroundings.

Shadows shone down on the weed-filled ground, then I caught the first wave of attackers coming from over one of the brick walls.

They all charged for Kinsley, but what surprised me more was that I wasn’t the only one to move into their path. Markus was next to me, helping protect her.

Maybe he really wasn’t anything like his father.

Kinsley shifted into her wolf behind us and snarled loudly when two other wolves leapt for her on the opposite side.

There was no way to protect her back while combatting with the new attackers, forcing me to be okay with her fighting on her own while I took care of as many wolves as I could.

I charged forward and grabbed the nearest one by the neck, then slammed him down onto the hard ground, cracking the earth from the impact.

His eyes fluttered, then closed when his head lolled to the side as he passed out.

I was up and reaching for the next, but Markus was already trading blows with the quick bastard.

I went to Kinsley’s side, tempted to shift myself, but I didn’t want to flame out just yet and wasn’t sure how well I could control my demon if we had reason to believe that Kinsley was truly in trouble.

Control was something I’d long ago mastered, but I wasn’t stupid enough to believe that the bond wouldn’t mess with that.

My fist met the snapping jowls of a wolf and broke his jaw with one hit as I stepped forward. Kinsley was battling two men. One in human form and the other in his wolf. The black beast was foaming at the mouth while the man was trying to keep her distracted by continuously circling around them both.

His speed was impressive, but Kinsley’s wolf was smarter than that.

She went for the wolf’s throat, finally ignoring the second guy, and tore at his skin there. His sharp claws dug into her side, and she yelped, but the noise ended in a growl. She seemed to recover enough to keep control of the opposing wolf, forcing him onto his back.

Blood coated her muzzle, and he whimpered beneath her.

I thought she was done, but the other man finally shifted and landed on her back.

Ire rose within me, and I couldn’t stop my next movements.

My body heated, dark-green energy coating my skin as I shifted into my wolf. My body became a blur as I raced toward my mate.

Using my wolf’s head, I shoved the second attacker off her and he went flying into the metal side of the building, leaving an indent in the shape of his body before he dropped to the ground.

Markus was just finishing with his two men, and I turned to find Lia standing in the corner with her hands out.

I hadn’t realized she wasn’t in the fight, but now I could see that she was in her own way.

She stood with each of her hands directed toward the brick walls. A barely visible shimmering energy projected from her palms.

My eyes followed the trails of power and they each created a shield, likely keeping more wolf shifters from joining the impromptu attack.

It was nice to see she was capable of being something other than an annoyance to me.

In the seconds it had taken me to see what was going on around us, Kinsley had shifted back to two feet, fully dressed, and her chest was heaving while her eyes were wide and wild. “That was a fucking rush.”

Hell. She was possibly more insane than I’d realized.

“It’s…not over…yet,” Lia said with a strained voice. “Need to let go.”
