He surprised me by shaking my hand first. “Tuck Castor.”

I kept my grip firm and nodded. “Kinsley Ash. This is Grayson Barrett, Lia, and I’m sure you know Markus.” I pointed at each of them once I’d released his hand.

Tuck’s hazel eyes appraised each person in our group. His long, blond hair fell over his ears, and his sun-kissed skin was puckered with scars along his arms.

“Ryder told me we were heading to the smaller portion of No Man’s Land up north,” Tuck said, his gaze bouncing between myself and Grayson.

Since I wasn’t familiar with the areas around here yet, I let Grayson give that confirmation. “Seems the Johnathon we want to check out is holed up at a warehouse just a few blocks from the bar out there.”

Tuck smirked. “I know where that is.”

I didn’t care enough to know what had him smiling, but it seemed as if he was going to tell us anyway.

“There’s a mermaid server there who nearly cut my head off last time I went for a drink,” Tuck said. “Fun place.”

“Right,” I said, my tone flat. “We’ll take your word for it. Is your team ready?”

The shifter seemed to finally remember that we weren’t there to chitchat. His face lost the grin, and he nodded. “We’ll follow and remain slightly spread out, staying in the shadows so as not to draw too much attention.” He reached into his pocket and handed a small device to me. “If you put that into your ear, we’ll be able to communicate.”

I rolled the small, plastic earpiece between my fingers before putting it in place. “Follow us, then.”

Grayson’s hand rested at the base of my spine when I turned around to head in the direction of No Man’s Land. “You’re going to make one hell of an Alpha Supreme,” he whispered into my ear.

Compliments from my mate had been far and few between during our training, and this one went straight to my heart.

Partially because I enjoyed seeing the softer side of Grayson, and also because when he’d said that…I couldn’t help but hope he was right.

Chapter22

GRAYSON

Tuck’s team did just as he’d said they would. They stayed in the shadows, keeping things from looking out of the ordinary. We decided to walk, because my jeep might have been recognized in No Man’s Land and Lia could teleport us out if needed.

I wasn’t sure the unicorn had any limits when it came to what she was capable of. I also didn’t know if that was a good thing or not.

Kinsley seemed to trust Lia explicitly, but power had a way of twisting a person into something they never thought they’d be. If Lia was willing to reveal who she was in order to tap into the greater depths of her energy…

Well, I’d be keeping an eye on her.

We were only a few blocks from Ryder’s territory, which we learned was marked by blue paint on the street signs, and when we began seeing green in places, that meant we’d crossed into Ethan’s faction.

He hadn’t won as many fights as the other two, but according to Ryder, the shifter was still someone to be leery of.

Kinsley took that seriously, and her focus seemed sharp as we traveled the cracked streets under the ruse that we were headed to the bar.

The Riff-Raff was apparently run by rejected supernaturals and attracted an interesting crowd. I had no desire to step foot in there, but Markus mentioned it was near where we were headed. If anyone was suspicious of Ryder’s guests moving through Fire and Fluorite, talking about where we were going might help us avoid any unnecessary fights.

Though, I’d been itching to really beat the shit out of someone. Especially since I’d had to spend several days watching others lay hands on my mate and even beat on her myself.

That, I wasn’t a fan of.

Sure, I’d had no problems punching Kinsley and plotting her death when I’d thought she’d been a power-stealing, child-murdering witch, but the thought of truly hurting her or letting anyone else do so now…made every facet of me boil with the darkness I worked to keep tightly bound.

“I’m going to get so drunk when we get to Riff-Raff.” Lia giggled, hanging on to Markus.

I couldn’t tell whether or not she was putting on an act with the way she draped herself over the wolf shifter, pawing at his chest. Regardless, I looked away.

Kinsley seemed to be ignoring them as well, which made me want her even more.
