Markus shifted back to his human form, and I noticed that Lia had never transformed into her unicorn. So much for her no longer hiding.

“I was banished by an Alpha Supreme who no longer lives, not by this House,” Markus replied confidently. “Unless you’re here to tell me you’ve successfully filled the Alpha Supreme position, there’s not a fucking thing you can do about my presence, Ethan.”

The dark-haired leader stepped forward. “Are you here to fight for that role?”

“No, but you still won’t ever have it,” Markus spat.

Ethan chuckled and waved back the three russet-colored, snarling wolves. “And why do you think that?”

I turned to Kinsley, already thinking she better not fucking do what I thought she was about to do, but I was too late to stop her.

She’d finished shifting back to her fully dressed human form and stepped forward. “Because this House belongs to me.”

Ethan hissed and seemed to lose control of his wolf, judging by the claws I watched his fingers turn into. “Who the fuck do you think you are?”

His voice was raspy and thick with fear.

“I’m the woman who will gladly remove your head from your body if you don’t back the fuck down,” Kinsley said with an eerie calmness that impressed even me.

“Attack!” Ethan shouted, but it seemed as if one of us was already prepared for that.

Lia finally shifted, and a shimmering silver glow emanated from around her soft, white coat, highlighting the midnight blue in her mane and tail.

Kinsley changed back to her wolf as well, but before she could do anything, Lia had already skewered two of the three wolves, and the third had run off like the fucking coward I believed their leader to be.

“Take one step toward my sister, and it will be your last,” Markus threatened Ethan when his eyes didn’t leave Kinsley’s charcoal wolf, which was pulsing with energy even I knew better than to fuck with.

Ethan glanced at each of us, but instead of taking a step back, his back arched forward and his clothes exploded around him.

Fucking idiot. So much for her not fighting one of the faction leaders today.

His off-white wolf stalked toward Kinsley, snapping his teeth and foaming at the mouth. My eyes paid more attention to Kinsley, but there wasn’t the slightest ounce of fear coming from her.

She was ready. She’d been made for this.

I didn’t know how—after the sheltered way she’d been raised—she’d settled so easily into this more gruesome lifestyle, but when Ethan swiped at her wolf, she was more than prepared for the hit.

Chapter23

KINSLEY

Ihadn’t been certain if I’d killed any of the wolves I’d been fighting so far, but I knew as soon as Ethan took his first step toward me that he wasn’t going to bow down to me.

There was a darkness in his eyes. A rage there that told me he had nothing left to lose.

Completely different than what I saw in Grayson’s.

Ethan was desperate.

I ducked and rolled in my wolf form when he tried clawing at my eyes with his first hit. He must have been expecting the move, because before I was on my feet again, the mangy wolf sank his teeth into my back.

My wolf snarled, and energy from deep inside us swelled through our body.

It wasn’t the normal wolf magic that I felt, but something that was still vaguely familiar. The burning in my matted fur began to lessen and I whipped around, digging my claws into his back leg and tearing through the muscles there.

Fury filled me, and I let instinct take over. Instinct I hadn’t known existed before I’d first shifted, but one I trusted with my whole being after all the time I’d spent in my wolf form this last week.

I assumed that was what had helped me bond with my wolf more seamlessly and would serve to keep us alive much longer than anyone suspected at first glance.
