An alpha wolf shifter who belonged right where she was.

This was my House, and nobody was going to take my home away from me again.

The more I thought the words, the more they became ingrained in me. It wasn’t just because Lia had brought me to Fire and Fluorite thanks to a vision or because Markus had shown up, revealing I had half-brothers.

No, I’d felt something deeper the moment we’d arrived here, and while I hadn’t understood those feelings in the beginning, I grew more attached to them by the day.

More attached to this House and the people I was meeting and the people I knew needed saving, so they no longer had to live in fear.

I might not have had the same terrors growing up, but I understood what it meant to never feel safe. Nobody deserved to live that way.

Grayson finally broke from his frozen state, and the heat from his skin died down enough that when he touched me, I no longer burned. At least not in the painful sense.

“You’re okay,” he said, his voice still hoarse but softer this time.

I nodded and held his gaze with my own. “I am.”

A rock crunched behind us, and I glanced behind Grayson to see Tuck walking toward us with his hands in his pockets and his head high.

“Per Ryder’s call, we let the wolves you didn’t kill escape,” Tuck said. “Ryder assumes they’ll head back to the faction and tell them about you.”

I knew it was only a matter of time before I publicly had to acknowledge what I’d already mentally accepted, so this news didn’t bother me. “We’re still going to search for Johnathon.”

Grayson’s hand tightened around my palm. “We should rest for the day and try again tomorrow.”

Given the aches in my back that I assumed would take a couple hours or so to heal, I wanted to agree with him, but still, I shook my head. “We had a plan, and we’re not going to deviate from that just because some asshole decided it was his day to die.”

Tuck glanced at the asshole in question. “We’ll clean this up while you figure out what you’re going to do.”

Without looking at Grayson again, I saw Markus being held up by Lia. He had a bruise along his neck, and I wondered if his wolf had been bit there. My friend, however, seemed fine at least.

Grayson’s lowered voice sounded in my ear. “I’m not saying you can’t handle looking for Johnathon, but you’ve made a very loud statement here today. Do you want to risk searching for Johnathon, finding another few supernaturals to fight, and possibly coming back here beat to shit?”

Fuck.He made a good point. Markus was hurt. I was…not one hundred percent.

Unless I was going to rely on Tuck and his team, which I didn’t want to do, then Grayson was right.

It wasn’t that I didn’t trust Ryder’s people, but just as I’d said before, I wanted to prove a point.

I’d shown up here with a rejected House member, a supernatural who was supposed to be extinct, and a mate with powers most wolf shifters had no access to.

We had something to prove as a whole, just as much as I did as the future Alpha Supreme to Fire and Fluorite.

There wouldn’t be a point, at any time, that we could appear weak. Even after multiple fights.

“Fine, but we leave again first thing in the morning.” I took a step closer to Markus. “Are you okay?”

He grimaced just looking up at me. “Nothing that won’t heal overnight.”

“I’ll take good care of him.” Lia grinned widely. “Don’t worry.”

I hadn’t beenthatconcerned, but now I was a little grossed out.

“I’ll get us home,” Lia added when she reached for me. “Keep a tight hold on Grayson’s hand.”

As soon as my fingers squeezed harder around his, the air was pulled from my lungs and my vision went dark, but only for a couple seconds. Then, I was wobbling next to the couch in our living room.

“Impressive,” I said with a bit of a groan.
