“What do you mean?” I asked when she didn’t elaborate.

She glanced back briefly. “I sense something in him. Not like I do with Fire and Fluorite or Markus, but there’s a flicker of confirmation there when we’re around him.”

I briefly wondered if that meant Ryder could be related to Kinsley’s birth mother, but I didn’t want to mention that to her if she hadn’t already come to that conclusion herself. We could figure that out when there was less shit going on around us.

We quickly got back to the house and went right into the jeep. Kinsley sat in the passenger’s seat but stared longingly at the steering wheel. “I want to learn to drive.”

Another annoyance about her past that I kept to myself. Kinsley was already well aware of how shitty her coven had treated her, even if they’d been trying to protect her for reasons unknown. She didn’t need me to comment on that, so instead, I nodded. “I’ll give you your first lesson just as soon as we have some downtime.”

She smiled and squeezed my thigh. “That would be perfect.”

We headed toward No Man’s Land, all four of us watching the streets as we went. There weren’t any large groups out, but a few small ones were hanging out in the alleys at various points. None of them seemed to follow us until we got to Tenth Street, like Ryder had suggested.

A group in all black disappeared into the shadows as we passed by and I saw a flash of blue, which was the color of Ryder’s faction.

Nobody in the jeep said anything as we continued. When we crossed over the border, leaving Fire and Fluorite behind, tension weighed down on my shoulders.

It was my job to protect Kinsley, and I was potentially bringing her closer to the man who wanted her dead or as his captive.

I’d been tempted to ask her to stay behind, but I’d already known her answer, so I hadn’t bothered.

She reached across the center console and grabbed my hand without looking over at me. Her eyes stayed on the road, like mine should have been, which was how I missed the body being thrown right in front of our vehicle.

“Watch out!” Kinsley shouted.

My reflexes were at least still working as needed, and I slammed on the brakes, no longer able to see the body, but I hadn’t felt a thud, either, so I didn’t think we’d hit them.

I glanced right to see a young woman rubbing her hands over her jeans and wearing a dark smirk as she shrugged. “The dumpster was full.”

She flicked ebony hair with an iridescent sheen to it behind her shoulder, then opened the door back into a bar that I then noticed was the one called The Riff-Raff that Tuck had mentioned previously.

The name seemed even more fitting after that little display.

The guy who’d just been thrown out finally got up. He was grumbling about something, but when I revved the engine, he at least had the decency to move the fuck out of my way.

“That was Myra,” Markus said as we got going again. “The mermaid shifter Tuck mentioned before. Her bite is known to be more severe than her bark.”

“Why is she working in No Man’s Land?” Kinsley glanced back at her half-brother.

He shrugged. “Not my business to know.”

Kinsley started looking around now that we were surrounded by more buildings. “Isn’t the circus over here?”

Lia pushed forward in her seat and pointed over Kinsley’s shoulder. “It’s that way. Just before those taller pines. We took the long way into Fire and Fluorite, so we didn’t pass most of these buildings before.”

Remembering the instructions Markus had given me previously, I knew that we were getting closer to the warehouse, so I parked in front of the least rundown building of the block.

“We’re going to walk from here,” I said once I’d turned off the engine.

Nobody argued with me, and after I got out, I waited for Kinsley at the front of the jeep. She took my hand and kept her head high while her eyes did all the scanning.

I glanced back at Lia, wondering if she would sense anything before the rest of us, but since she hadn’t said anything, I switched into my normal tracking mode.

My wolf rose to the surface just enough for me to use his senses. Normally, I had something to go off of, but my memory was fuzzy from the day I’d received the letter. I could remember the words and what I was supposed to do, but the scent of the magic was gone.

That hadn’t ever happened to me, and it pissed me the fuck off.

We kept walking while I searched for unusual power, except there was none. At least not on this street.
