“I have a theory,” she said, circling me. “One I’m not sure how to test, but it’s intriguing nonetheless.”

This time, I rumbled, wanting her to get to the mother fucking point.

Lia winked, then kneeled before me, lightly touching me again. “You’re a wolf shifter, through and through—there’s no doubt about that—but you were raised in a coven with your wolf suppressed, surrounded by magic. That may have changed your natural born supernatural abilities, something that bond magic could have triggered.”

I couldn’t stand having a one-sided conversation anymore. My wolf moved back, and I shifted to two feet again. “What the hell does that mean, Lia?”

“If I’m right,” she said pointedly, “it means that your wolf has a magical charge nobody else has ever seen from a pure-blooded shifter.”

A part of me felt like I should have been thrilled with this revelation, but the only thing I felt in that moment was dread.

Pure fucking dread, because I’d thought I had left the coven behind. This felt like a step back into the life I wanted badly to forget.

Chapter28

GRAYSON

Watching Kinsley be pulled away by Lia made my thoughts darken, but I did my best to hide that reaction from my mate.

I’d had her locked away for days, and I didn’t want her to have any regrets about tying herself to me. She needed that time away with her friend, and I needed to learn to be okay with that.

“If I can be frank,” Ryder said after Kinsley and Lia had headed out of the yard, “the bond between the two of you is quite powerful now that you’ve completed it.”

I hadn’t realized that the energy was identifiable, but that didn’t bother me.

“As should be expected with two alphas,” I answered, wondering what his point was.

Ryder and Tuck shared a look again, and I snarled before either could speak. “If you think it’s okay to talk about my mate and me behind our backs, then you’re sorely mistaken. Say what you think if you’ve already said it out loud to one another.”

Tuck took a step back, which was when I noticed my hands were clenched and I’d moved closer to them. “We didn’t mean anything by it. We’re just curious how well things will go with an Alpha Supreme mated to another alpha. This House has already been through so much. We don’t want there to be more tension if your wolves aren’t okay with hierarchy.”

“He’s right,” Ryder said. “I want to back Kinsley, but not if the House is going to be in the same position it is now, even with her leading.”

My wolf had never once challenged Kinsley’s, but that wasn’t something they got to know. Instead, I took another step closer, towering over both men. “Our bond might be new, but it’s as solid as they come. The House and the supernaturals here only need to worry about the threats that come against us. Kinsley and I won’t have any problems with each other. Not now or ever.”

They each stiffened as I spoke, then nodded.

“Noted,” Ryder said. “Would you like me to send some wolves to the park for practice?”

I shook my head. “Markus, Lia, and I can handle things today.”

More importantly, I didn’t need any new males around my mate. Not when their leaders had just pissed me the fuck off.

Ryder and Tuck quickly departed after that, closing the door behind them.

Markus moved to my side and asked, “Do you need a shot of whiskey or something?”

I chuckled darkly and shook my head. “Why don’t we go join our mates instead?”

“Yeah, that’s a much better idea,” he said, then he paused at the door, looking over at me. “I really do care about Kinsley like family. I’m not like my father.”

My hand closed over his shoulder. “I know.”

He snorted and nodded. “Of course, you do.”

“But it’s nice to hear you say the words out loud,” I said. “Kinsley has been through enough, and I’ll do whatever I can to minimize the things that hurt her moving forward.”

Markus seemed to ponder his next words carefully as we headed outside, but then all he said was, “I’m glad she has you.”
