We pulled apart, and both of our eyes glistened under the kitchen light.

“What can I help with?” I asked, pointing to the food he was making.

“How are you with pancakes?” He reached for the box of batter.

I cringed. “Um, I’m sure I can manage on my own.”

His laughter had my chest warming. “We’ll figure it out together.”

Together. Like brother and sister.

I was good with that.

Not even five minutes later, I had egg yuck on my fingers and flour on my nose from sticking my face too close to the bowl as I’d dumped the ingredients in.

There also might have been more stuff on the counter than there was in the mixer, but we were having fun, and that was exactly what I’d needed after the previous night.

The night when I’d killed another person for the second time.

I was trying to keep the darker thoughts out, and Markus was definitely helping with that, but it was still harder than I would have liked.

When we finally finished plating all of the food we’d made, I started to head back toward the bedroom to check on Grayson, but Lia startled me before I could get too far.

“I had a vision,” she said loudly and with wide eyes. “A really fucking big one.”

Markus was at her side in half of a second. “What did you see?”

Lia shuddered, a crease forming between her brows while Markus guided her to one of the chairs at the table. “A lot. Where’s Grayson?”

“I’ll go get him,” I said, but he was already coming out of the door by the time I’d turned around.

He joined me without saying anything, looking very much awake. Almost as if he’d known I’d been having a moment with my brother and had waited to come out.

I hadn’t thought I could want him more, but he seemed to prove me wrong every single day.

We each took a seat around the table, the food long forgotten, and waited for Lia to tell us what she’d seen.

Her palms pressed over the table, and she took a deep breath. “I’ve never had one so vivid before. Normally, my visions come in small snippets that I have to put together before I know what they’re saying, but this one spoke loud and clear.”

I leaned forward in my chair. “What did you learn?”

“It’s hard to describe what I see,” she answered, “but what I translated from the images was huge. Johnathon and Hazel were working with Dylan. He was under strict orders to make himself known within the House, but not to take over until he was told it was time.”

I was pretty sure he’d been told this week, given how quickly he’d challenged me.

Lia continued. “Hazel was here last night with the group that attacked Ryder’s people. That’s why nobody could track where the shifters went once Tuck knew they were there. Hazel must have teleported them.”

“Fuck.” Grayson growled. “Ryder is going to want to know about this.”

“But that’s not all,” Lia said. “I know where they are, and I know what their plans are.”

She paused for a second too long, and I snapped. “What the fuck are they?”

“First, they hoped Dylan would kill you, but Johnathon and Hazel wouldn’t have been able to predict that you’d be mated or have extra strength from the magic you soaked up your whole life.” Lia grinned like a proud momma. “Now, it seems as if they’re scrambling, so I can’t be sure of this last part, but what I gathered was that they’re going to attack us head-on in three days’ time. They want to kill Kinsley, and then Johnathon will do a hostile takeover with Hazel by his side. Given the weaknesses within Fire and Fluorite, his plan could work.”

“Only if that fucker can get his hands on Kinsley,” Markus spat, “but that’s not going to happen.”

Grayson grabbed my hand under the table and squeezed hard. “No, it’s not. We need to attack them before they can come here again. Do you know where they are?”
