He had to be fucking insane, but I didn’t say a word. Instead, I paid as much attention as I could to the warring dragons.

Cillian’s left wing swung out, and the sharp point cut into Knox’s face, drawing blood.

Knox roared and flicked his tail around, just missing me.

This had Cillian fuming. Or I assumed so based on the smoking huffs coming out of his nose.

I was waiting for him to use his lightning ability, but that moment never came.

Knox came for us again, and Cillian dropped his wings, sending us plummeting to the ground. Knox was right behind us. His claws skimmed the ends of my hair that were currently above my head. “Move!” I yelled at Cillian, unsure if he was aware just how close our opponent was.

Except we were too close to the trees and there wasn’t anywhere to go other than up, right into Knox’s path.

Cillian continued with his current trajectory, right into the ground. I had no clue what he was thinking, but if he got me scalped by the fucking claws still reaching for my head, he was going to suffer. Immensely.

Right after I killed Knox.

Trees were right in front of us. Knox was still above us and the ground was below. We could turn around, but the time that would take would allow Knox to have the upper hand.

I wanted to scream at Cillian, but I held tight, hoping he was about to unveil some superpower I wasn’t aware he had.

Just as I was certain we were going to crash right into the trees, Lykem’s dragon came out of nowhere and plowed into Knox. As soon as that happened, Cillian’s wings went out, slowing his speed. He turned around, taking me further and further away.

I glanced back to see Lykem blocking Knox from attacking and their two dragons going head to head.

Fuck. Lykem better be fine. I wasn’t going to be okay if we’d run and gotten Cillian’s best friend killed.

ChapterSeventeen

CILLIAN

Ishould have known better. I shouldn’t have kept Dawsyn at my house for longer than a minute. Hell, we shouldn’t have even bothered going. There wasn’t anything there that I needed, but telling her no when she’d wanted so badly to see where I lived was hard.

Knox had almost gotten to her. Again. I’d nearly failed to protect her. Again.

The rage filling me wasn’t going to lessen anytime soon.

If I hadn’t had Dawsyn with me, I’d have killed the fucker right then and there, but there was no way I was going to risk my mate getting caught in the crossfire, which was also why I didn’t use my lightning against Knox. I was too afraid of her getting burned from the energy while she was on my back.

As we raced back to the caves, I knew we had to do something about their connection, and soon. I hadn’t even had her back for a full day, and he’d already come for her.

The bond she had with him needed to be fucking severed.

As soon as we were close enough to the caves, I landed and Dawsyn jumped off of me. Her entire body was shaking, and her eyes were wide.

I shifted back to my human form and went straight to her, holding her painfully tight against my chest. “I’m so fucking sorry.”

“That had nothing to do with you,” she growled. Her anger that I had mistaken for fear was suddenly palpable.

“I need to get you out of here,” I said, pressing my lips to the top of her head and anchoring her to me. “He can’t get that close to you again.”

“We’re meeting my family tomorrow,” she said. “We’ll figure something out then.”

I shook my head. “No. Tonight. I won’t risk him coming after you again while everyone is sleeping.”

She leaned back, heavy emotions washing over her eyes as she stared up at me. “I’m going to get everyone killed.”

“No. This is all on him.” If anything, I’d started this war simply by being born. Whatever vendetta Knox had, it started with my family. Dawsyn was merely leverage he was trying to use, but I wasn’t going to let him.
