Me: I’ll be in touch.

I won’t be. That’s a lie to keep him off my back while I figure out what I want to do about this woman.

She’s fucking terrified, yet there’s a fire in her eyes that tells me that no matter how much fear is pulsing through her veins right now, she’s also prepared to claw my eyes out if given the opportunity.

What’s worse is that for some fucked-up reason, it makes me want to bend her over my bed and fuck the fire right out of her. A twisted desire to break her over and over again until she no longer recognizes herself in the mirror. Until I’m no longer trapped in whatever spell she’s weaving.

We pull into the Roe compound. It’s an old apartment building that has been turned into the private living quarters for myself and a select few I trust most. It’s also good for conducting business that needs to remain private.

Like hiding a woman who’s seen more than she should have.

As the car stops in my designated parking spot near the elevator, Jaxon steps out, ready to open my door. However, I interrupt him by rolling down the window, moving my gaze back to Olivia. “Everybody go the fuck away,” I command, my voice leaving no room for argument. “Except you.”

I keep my eyes on her shaking form as I roll the window up and wait for Damon and Vin to go out the back hatch.

Jaxon watches me through the tinted window. I can tell he doesn’t agree with the choice I’ve made tonight, but too fucking bad. He’s not the boss. I am. I’ll run my business however I see fit.

Once the three of them have entered the elevator, I unbuckle my seatbelt, then lock my stare on Olivia’s rather defiant one. “What you saw tonight—”

“I didn’t see anything,” she interrupts, her voice laced with bravado I’m not believing. “Just let me go.”

A grin tugs at the corners of my mouth, and I watch how she swallows nervously, staring at my smile. “You see, in my line of work, things don’t work that way. We don’t justlet—”

“What kind of business are you in, Mr. Monroe?” she interjects, her tone dripping with snark.

A surge of irritation courses through me, my hands itching with the desire to assert dominance, to teach her a lesson. But I choose a different approach. I decide to inject a little more fear into her veins.

Reaching across the car, I wrap my fingers around her throat, applying just enough pressure to feel every hitch of her breath beneath my touch.

“Don’t interrupt me,” I state calmly, yet with an underlying threat I’m certain she doesn’t miss. “You should have died back there, but thanks to me, you’re still alive. For now. So, it would be in your best interestnotto piss me off.”

I pause, observing the widening of her light blue eyes, now glossed over with trepidation. “Good,” I say. “We’re going to walk into my building, and you’re not going to be difficult. Do I make myself clear?”

She nods again, but since I don’t trust her compliance, I add, “I may have spared your life, but I have no qualms about tying you up and throwing you in a cell. Feel free to tempt me if you’d like to find out what that’s like.”

I release her and open my door, but she hesitates, not following my lead. I turn back to her. “Does that idea of a cell sound appealing?” I ask with a tilt of my head.

She shrugs, her nonchalance fueling my frustration. “I mean, if it keeps me from getting killed or choked…”

Clearly, she’s still not properly scared.

“Get the fuck out the car, Olivia,” I demand, growling with authority.

She lets out an actual fucking sigh, blatantly insulting me, then slides across the bench seat. “You could say please.”

Once she’s standing beside the SUV, I slam the door shut, narrowly miss hitting her shoulder, and use my other hand to push her against the cool metal. “I don’t fucking say please. If you think any of this is a joke, I’ll quickly show you otherwise.”

She blinks, but wisely chooses to remain silent. I grab her arm firmly and drag her toward the elevator. She’s going in the fucking cell, whether she likes it or not.

It doesn’t matter that her defiance makes my dick awaken unlike it has in much too long. I won’t tolerate disobedience. Not from anyone.

I press the button for the sublevels, leaving it there long enough for my thumbprint to be scanned and access to be given. This is where the darkest and most illicit aspects of our business occur. A place deep underground, encased in brick and virtually soundproof.

Maybe with her out of my sight, I’ll be able to figure out what the fuck I’m going to do with her in a more permanent capacity.

Keep her, a voice inside my head suggests, but I scoff at the idea.

As appealing as that could be, Olivia doesn’t strike me as the type of woman who can bekept, and I won’t allow her to be a distraction to the life I’ve painstakingly constructed.
