“How much time, exactly?” Knowledge was power, and I was running a little short in the “power” department here.

He shrugged. “A while. It’ll be several hours before your… rescuers arrive in Mexico and realize you’re not there, that the beacon they’re following isn’t you.”

My breath tried to catch in my throat, but I forced it out, slow and even. I already knew he’d had the tracker removed, but I’d assumed he’d still had me transported back to Mexico.

Apparently not.

So, where the hell was I? And if I couldn’t answer that question, what were the chances Brute, Gabe, or anyone else could?

My hands tried to shake, but I willed them to stop. There was no way I’d give Domínguez that satisfaction. This wasn’t the first shitty situation I’d been in.

But if he deliberately had them all running off to Mexico in search of me, then why—

Oh shit.

The realization hit me like a Mack truck. Because this had never been about stopping what Gabe and I did.

“Ah,” he said. “You’ve finally figured it out, have you?” he asked with a satisfied smirk that someone seriously needed to claw off his face.

Then again, maybe it was my face I needed to be more concerned with at the moment. Clearly, it was giving me away.

“Have I figured out that you’re a psychotic freak with visions of grandeur that will be your downfall?” I nodded in answer to my own question. “I think that one was pretty clear.”

He smiled, unperturbed. “You really are amusing, Greta.”

“That’s what I’m here for,” I quipped back, but it was only once the words were out that I realized how true they were. I needed to keep him amused… entertained long enough for Brute and Gabe to find me.

Becausenotfinding me wasn’t an option here, not one I really wanted to consider. I didn’t think dead would be a good look on me, to be honest.

“So, let me see if I’ve got this all worked out,” I said, leaning back in my seat like I wasn’t tied to the damn thing. “You saw a few families and a few bikers who play nice with each other and thought if you could get them distracted, you could swoop in and snatch up everything that belonged to them?”

He nodded while a smile played at the corners of his lips. For a sick freak, the guy smiled far too much.

I made my brow furrow, feigning confusion. “You’ve already got a decent-size empire in Mexico,” I said. “So, this is a bit of a gamble, don’t you think? Sure, your men might win, but you’re sure to lose some in the process. And it’s also possible that they lose completely. You’re not exactly going up against small fish here,” I said, shaking my head. “In my opinion, if you’re into gambling, you should have hit up a casino—much less bloodshed, lots of pussy for the high-rollers, and no chance you end up six feet under come the end of the night.”

“True,” he conceded. Then a crease formed between his eyebrows and he leaned in closer, looking in my eyes like he was looking into a microscope.

I widened my eyes. “If you’re looking for the Holy Grail, I’m pretty sure it’s not in there.”

He sat back, his gaze still fixed on mine, but no longer really searching.

“I can’t help but wonder if you’re really as fearless as you seem, Greta, or if perhaps, you’re a rather good actress.”

“Well, I haven’t won any Academy Awards, if that’s what you’re thinking,” I replied, hedging, buying time while I considered which answer would amuse him more. Would he be more entertained to think he held captive the terrified girl or the fearless rival?

He didn’t respond; he just kept looking.

Until he withdrew a small butterfly knife from his pants pocket and flicked it open.

“Untie her right hand, Mateo,” he instructed his front boss who was still standing silently five steps away. “And put it on the table, fingers flat.”

Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit.

This was a problem.

Do something!cried the parts of me that were rather fond of my fingers—which was pretty much all of me.

“Confuse them…”Vito had said, but that wasn’t right for this situation. Domínguez was smart. He wasn’t going to be easily confounded.
