Deo nodded once. No words, but the message was clear.

Aurelio turned back around, pulled out his gun, and shot the weasel between the eyes. A quick death; that was the best he could offer him.

There was always that moment of silence after someone died.

I never really felt like rejoicing, and most of the time, mourning didn’t seem right either. A moment to pray?—but to what? Gabe seemed quite convinced there was… something out there. Me? I wasn’t so sure. After some of the shit I’d seen, if there was some almighty deity out there letting it happen, it had to be one twisted fuck. Not sure I really wanted to draw its attention.

So, I stared at the weasel, thinking about twisted deities, until Deo cleared his throat and Aurelio started packing up his tools.

“Well, we have a ‘who’ and a ‘where’,” Deo said. “And I think I might know what to do next.”

“Oh?”

“Domínguez,” he said like that explained everything.

I blinked. “I might need a little more here.”

“Javier Domínguez reached out to my father about a month ago. He’d heard we were branching out, taking on new business associates, but we were too busy dealing withEl Víbora’sshit to look at anything outside it at the time.”

“But withEl Víboraall taken care of…”

“Exactly.”

Hm. “Another stroke of good luck?” I shook my head. “Either the stars are aligning for us here or some twisted deity is setting us up for a big surprise. Probably not one we’re going to like.”

Deo smiled. “Before we start worrying about deities, I’ll have to discuss it with my father, but—”

“I appreciate your help with the weasel, Deo, but are you sure you want to get involved? This isn’t on you?” He’d helped out immeasurably in taking downEl Víbora, but this crazy rescue shit Gabe and I did wasn’t his problem.

He shrugged. “What can I say? I guess I just like working with you, Greta.”

“Si, I am awfully lovable, aren’t I?”

He scoffed. “It’s just fun watching you do all the crazy shit you do.”

I smiled, because I liked this. The easy rapport, no sexual tension snapping between us. Though I hadn’t grown up with him, I kind of saw Deo as a big brother. It didn’t hurt that we kind of looked alike. We both had blond hair and light hazel eyes.

“If you’re up for another ride into crazy-town…” I said, shrugging.

He smiled. “Always.”

“There’s one thing, though,” I said, biting at my bottom lip.

“Just one?”

Well, probably not. A lot of “things” tended to come up on these crazy-ass adventures. For now, though… “Brute Hastings.”

Deo cocked an eyebrow. “Your reward for a job well done?”

Hm, not a bad idea. But I shook my head—we could talk about rewards later. “I told him that when I knew what this was, I’d get in touch with him and we’d go from there. But I got the feeling he’s going to want in.”

“‘In’? As in, you want me to set up a meet with Domínguez and bring the crazy president of the Old Dogs MC along?”

I shrugged. “Is it any worse than bringing me along?”

“Fair point,” he conceded, grinning.

“Gabe will be back home tomorrow. We can figure out exactly what ‘in’ looks like then. In the meantime… looks like we’re going back to Mexico.”
