It also explained whyZiettoVito was still gunning it, flying toward the private airstrip so fast that the whole world around us kind of looked like one giant, dark blur.

Leeri scoffed.

It didn’t escape my attention that she didn’t look the least bit intimidated here, which didn’t seem like the smartest move. Maybe she was pretty confident Brute wouldn’t actually hurt her. But Deo? He might not have been the same hulking size as Brute, but he was damned strong and armed to the teeth. I’m not sure I would have been feeling quite so cocky in her position.

“If you take me back now, I’ll convince Javier to spare your lives,” she said, her gaze flicking up to Brute at the last moment.

Deo laughed. “If we take you back there now, we’ll all be spending the night in a Mexican jail shithole—not my idea of fine accommodations, signorina.”

Leeri shook her head, glaring daggers at the seat in front of her.

“Then you’re all dead,” she muttered under her breath.

Oh good. More complications.

Would it be wrong to drop the prickly cactus off in a desert in the middle of nowhere?

Chapter Fifteen

Brute

“What the hell did you idiots do?” Greta snapped while Vito kept an eye on Leeri at the other end of the plane.

Deo laughed. “I think the words you’re looking for are ‘thanks for keeping my ass from ending up in prison’.”

Greta rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest. “Yeah, thanks, that would have been so much worse than having a scumbag cartelcapocoming after my ass forkidnappinghis little girlfriend.”

I leaned a shoulder against the captain’s cabin, looking at Leeri. She was still so fuming mad, she looked like a tomato with long, dark hair.

“Your intel wasn’t doing you a damn bit of good, darling. Now, you’ve got a new source,” I said, nodding at Leeri, “and I’ve got my sister out of that fucker’s claws.”

Greta looked fuming mad too, but instead of looking like a tomato, her hazel eyes were snapping and her cheeks were flushed. It didn’t bother me at all the way her chest was heaving, shoving her tits up higher until they looked like they might just spill right out of the low-cut shirt she was wearing.

Too bad she pressed her lips together and took a couple of deep breaths, and all that rage snapping in her seemed to tuck itself away. I don’t think it was gone, and it surprised me that the crazy young girl could get it under control so well.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” she said, digging her teeth into her bottom lip. “There hasn’t been any kind of bust on Domínguez’s cartel in nearly a decade. And the Lucianos? Never.” She shook her head. “There’s no way this was a coincidence.”

Her eyes seemed to go far away, and I could practically feel the wheels and cogs in her brain working in overdrive. When she came back, she’d resolved something, and she looked over at Leeri.

“It was you,” she said, speaking loud enough for the whole cabin to hear her.

Deo cocked an eyebrow, eyes contemplative.

Leeri glared back at her, lips pressed together, and “fuck you” radiating from every pore in her body.

“What are you talking about, darling?” I asked, not liking the direction this conversation was suddenly taking.

“There had to be an informant, someone who knew Domínguez would be handing off the product to us tonight.”

I shook my head. “That doesn’t mean it was Leeri.”

Greta sighed. “Think of the number of times she tried to get you to leave, Brute. She was trying to protect you, save you from getting scooped up with the rest of us.”

Leeri scoffed. “That’s a great story, but I’m afraid it’s not my bedtime yet.”

“Therewassomething off about her,” Deo said, ignoring Leeri.

I sure as hell didn’t want to agree with him, but there was no denying my sister had changed. But become a rat? She’d grown up in a world where that word was synonymous with shame, not to mention a painful, bloody death.
