She nodded, brow furrowed. “In one piece, I hope?”

“I can promise you that.”

She opened her mouth to say something at the same time a duck came waddling in fast motion from behind her, heading for the open front door. She grabbed him up quickly, mock-chastising him in a sing-song voice. Her pet—named Duck. It was better than Nic’s skunk “Bob”, I supposed. These people had strange fucking pets.

Leo kissed her, sent her back inside, and headed for his black Lamborghini Urus.

Fortunately, he was a good enough friend to drive silently for a while. Not good enough, apparently, to leave it alone altogether.

As we pulled into the lot where I’d brought us fishing the last time, he cleared his throat. “Do you want to tell me what this is about?” he asked. When I didn’t answer, he did it himself. “You just missed my remarkable company. I get that a lot.”

I glared at the smartass, then got out of the car, wandering toward the lake’s edge.

“Greta’s crazy as hell,” I spat out.

He laughed. “I could have told you that.”

“She’s going to do something stupid, and I can’t stop her because then I’d be stopping her from being her.” Out loud, it sounded like a rather childish explanation, but there it was.

Leo laughed harder. “And you’re supposing youcouldactually stop her?”

I glared at him. Leo was not helping.

“She’s half my size; of course, I could stop her.”

He shook his head. “She might be half your size, but that girl is quick, amico—like that little vampire in ‘Twilight’. What’s her name?”

Fuck if I knew.

“Alice—that’s it,” he said, answering his own question.

I cocked an eyebrow at him. Leo had never struck me as the “little vampire” type.

He shook his head. “Raven has a thing for vampires and shit. Made us all watch the whole damn series of movies a few weeks back.”

I sat down at the water’s edge, just looking at the fish swimming by.

“So, you and Greta?” Leo asked, smirking, shaking his head. “I did not see that one coming.”

“That makes two of us, my friend.”

“But I can see it.” He shrugged. “You might actually have to tie a rope around her to keep her in one place, but that girl’s got one hell of a big heart. And I imagine life will never be boring.”

I scoffed. That was one way of putting it. “I could use a little boring in my life.”

Leo laughed. That was getting annoying. “Since when?”

“Since worrying about the girl got so damn tiring.”

This time, he smiled sympathetically. “Are you sure she’s what you want then? I’m not sure she has any intention of slowing down any time soon.”

It was true, but there was one problem. “Not sure I could walk away even if I wanted to. And I don’t,” I confessed. Nor did the idea of making her slow down hold any appeal. I kind of just wanted Greta to stay Greta, but in a safe bubble where none of her crazy shit could end with her getting hurt.

“How does she feel about… this?” Leo asked, motioning in my general direction.

“She admitted she loved me and hated me in the same goddamned breath.”

He laughed; it wasn’t quite so irritating this time. “Well, there’s a fine line between the two. It could be worse.”
