Page 22 of Shae’s Bounty

My brows drop into a deep frown. Well, he’s right about that last part. Females were always easy. And if they didn’t come to me, there was always a willing enough whore when I was at Lux.

But never in my life have I wanted a female the way I want the little human.

Shae.

My tongue darts out to taste my bottom lip.

“Do you think she could be your fated?” Zell asks.

I start to shake my head, but the action falters.

It would explain the all-encompassing infatuation. But I’ve never put much into the belief that fate has one female destined to be mine. To be fair, I never expected to feel monogamous for any female. Not until Shae walked past that doorway where I was hiding. Ever since, I haven’t been able to even think of another female.

“Vesens don’t have fated mates,” I tell him.

“Are you certain?”

No. I’m no longer certain of anything.

The silence between us grows, stretching until I’m about to crawl out of my skin. My hands go to the chair’s armrests, and I’m about to push myself up and flee when Zell leans forward, stilling me.

“If my fated female was within my arm’s reach, I don’t think I’d have the restraint you are showing. Honor be damned,” he says. “So, I want you to know that the honor you are showing by sending your female away is not wasted on me. As such, I will do anything I can to help when you’re ready to claim Shae.”

“What makes you think I have any intention of claiming her, or any female?” I growl. As if Shae would want to be claimed by the likes of me.

Zell cocks his head to the side and arches one of his brow ridges. “You don’t have to.”

I’m still staring at him when he turns back to the console and begins typing.

“I’m setting a course for sector seven,” he tells me without taking his eyes from the screen. “We should arrive early the next rotation. You should get some rest.”

I should. My mind is in chaos, and at the center of the melee is a small human female with her wild hair that isn’t much longer than my own. Her cutting dark eyes. The full pink bow of her lips and her small, straight nose.

When I close my eyes, her image dances behind my lids. Her long slender neck and the way her chin tilts up defiantly when she meets my eyes without hesitation. I imagine the way she likes to rest her hands on her hips and how I want to knock them away and circle her narrow waist with my much larger hands. To draw her against me so I can feel how soft she would be against my hardness.

A low hum rumbles up from my throat, and I think of how she felt when I lifted her into my arms. At first, she was tense, every muscle tight as she fought me, which only made me hold her tighter. Until she let herself relax and sink into my hold.

I inhale sharply at the memory of the way her head felt resting against my chest, just under my chin. How the heat from her small body seeped through my skin to warm my bones. The incrediblerightnessI felt with her in my arms.

“Volethos.”

My chin jerks up, and, by the way he barked my name, I suspect it wasn’t the first time he’s said it.

“Go get some rest,” Zell tells me.

I find myself nodding and pushing myself to my feet. I start down the hallway that leads to the crew cabins, but my stride slows when I come to the first door.

There are only three rooms for crew. Two small rooms with bunk attachments. And the captain’s quarters. Naturally, Zell takes that one since this is his cruiser. The first room was empty, until now.

My feet shuffle to a stop in front of the door, and I lean my head in close when I hear the low, muted tones of speech coming from inside. Their voices are too low to make out what they are saying, but I catch myself listening anyway, picking out the higher tones of the dark female, and then the lower, huskier tones that belong to Shae.

I bring my hand up, bracing myself on the doorjamb, and then I rest my forehead against the cool metal of the door. The voices continue on the other side, sometimes peppered with light laughter. Other times their voices turn serious, and I wish I could hear what they were saying.

Eventually their speech fades out. Only then do I push myself away to wander to the opposite end of the hallway where my room is. Once I’m inside, I sit down on the edge of my bunk and let out a long sigh.

Kicking off my boots, I twist around so I’m lying on my back with my hands folded on my stomach. I’m tired. Weary. But my eyes won’t close, so I just stare up at the ceiling. Straining my ears, I listen uselessly for my female’s voice to bleed through the steel walls. Which, of course, it doesn’t.

So, I begin running through every memory I have of her. Starting with the look she turned my way when I watched her through the cracked doorway back at Kurrahstka’s pleasure house.
