She rests a hand on my shoulder and walks me through the carnage to the group at the end of the hall. We acknowledge each other with nods and then keep making our way through the hallways. I’m not sure where we’re going, and to be honest, I’m not sure I want to know enough to bother asking. The deeper into the station we go, the more I start to worry about Volethos again.

How will he be able to find me if I keep moving?

Another burst of lasers shoots past us, and if it wasn’t for Raela paying attention, one of them would have taken my head off if she hadn’t tossed me to the ground.

“Get your head in the game, girl,” she hisses into my ear. “Or I’ll be explaining to Volethos how I wasn’t able to keep his mate safe like I promised, and we’ll both end up on the other side.”

She’s right. This is not the time for daydreaming.

Gripping the blaster in my hand, I push myself up onto my elbows and take aim down the hallway. When I catch one of the orc aliens peeking around the corner at us, I squeeze the trigger. A second later, I hear a loud thump as he hits the ground.

“Nice shot!” Raela hoots, slapping my arm with the back of her hand. “I had a feeling you’d be a natural.”

I can’t help grinning back at her, and then we’re up and moving again. The further we go, the more fights we stumble onto. It isn’t long before I’m aiming and firing at anyone who points a blaster at me without a second thought.

We stay close together as we follow hallway after hallway. With each step, we’re getting closer to… wherever we’re going, judging by the increasing sounds of shouting, the pew of lasers, and scuffling. My body is tense and ready to react at a moment’s notice.

As we near another bend in the hall we’ve been following, I can hear fighting ahead. My hands tighten around the blaster, and I lift it slightly, preparing for anything that might come charging at us.

My focus is razor-sharp, so when I see the end of a blaster coming at us from around the corner, I don’t wait to see who, or what, it might be attached to. As soon as the body attached to it appears, I lift my blaster and fire.

“Vittu!” a voice grunts. A familiar voice.

In slow motion, I watch as the male’s head jerks back, narrowly missing the pulse of light I sent his way. Then he turns narrowed gold eyes on me.

“Volethos!” I gasp. I shove the blaster into the back of my waistband, and then I’m running toward him, launching myself into his arms, wrapping myself around him. “Oh, my god, you’re here! You’re safe!”

He holds me tightly to him and buries his face in my neck. “No thanks to you!” he huffs, but the words hold no heat behind them.

Shivers skitter up my spine when I feel him inhaling my scent, and then his lips find the sensitive spot where he bit me, and I moan.

“Ah-hem,” Raela coughs from behind us, reminding us that this really isn’t the time, nor the place.

Volethos growls against my neck, and I shudder when his teeth lightly mark the place where he bit me. Which reminds me—

“You fucking claimed me!” I bark, dropping my legs and giving him a push, trying to put some distance between us. But he’s not having it. His arms only tighten around me.

“I did,” he says, tipping my chin up, showing me he has zero regret.

“Next time, maybe warn me.” I purse my lips and narrow my eyes up at him.

A deep purr rumbles from his chest as he pulls me against him once more. “Next time, it will be your teeth on me.”

Heat roils through my body. “You want me to claim you?”

“I insist that you do.”

“But… does it even work that way?” I ask. “Since I’m human?”

His arms band around my body, and he squeezes, crushing me against him so I can feel all of him. Especially the steel bar of his cock pressing into my stomach.

“I don’t care if it does or not. I just need your mark on me. I don’t care if it’s from your teeth or if you fucking stab me with a knife. As long as it comes from you.”

Jesus Christ, that really shouldn’t make me feel as hot and achy as it does. “I fucking love you,” I exclaim as my arms slide around his neck. “But we’re not done talking about this.”

“Fair enough,” he purrs just before his lips crash onto mine. His tongue thrusts, lashing at me as one arm tightens around my body and his other hand threads through my hair.
