“You fuckingbitch!”he shouts, and a large wet glob of spit hits the side of my face.

I gag.

“Is this your doing? Did you really think you could take me down?” He rears back and kicks my side, forcing a croaked gasp from my already traumatized lungs as I curl around his foot. His evil laugh surrounds us. “This is my kingdom. I am invincible here.”

He crouches down and grabs the back of my hair in his fist again, pulling me off the ground. “After I’m done with you, you’ll wish it wasyouwho died instead of that pathetic male you are with.”

A sob rips through my throat as my feet dance just above the ground. No, I refuse to believe Volethos is dead. He can’t be. I’d feel it!

“Iwasgoing to spare you. To use you as a tool to draw customers in and nothing more. But now?” He shakes me until I’m flopping like a rag doll. “You’ll be servicing my house’s most depraved guests. They’ll pay handsomely for the chance to ruin you. And I’ll let them do anything they want. Your screams will be piped through the entire station like music.”

My stomach lurches, and for a moment I think I might vomit.

This can’t be happening. Where is the Federation? They are supposed to be stopping this! Have we lost already?

“Or maybe…” Kurrahstka lets go of my hair and wraps his hand around my throat again, before slamming my back against the wall. His fingers tighten, cutting off the blood flow to my brain and the oxygen to my lungs. “Maybe I should just kill you now and cut my losses.”

My mouth falls open, and my eyelids flutter as I struggle to drag in one last precious breath.

What if we really have lost? I feel like I’ve been fighting every day for years. Maybe it’s time to just give up. This—dying—is probably easier than anything Kurrahstka will do to me.

Except, haven’t I always taken the easy path? Switching jobs the moment things got hard or something happened that I didn’t like. Dropping college course if my grades weren’t what my parents would want them to be. And look where it’s led me.

No. I want—I need—to fight for this. Even if I die trying.

“Or maybe,” Kurrahstka leans in until our noses nearly touch, and I can feel his hot, fetid breath on my face, “I’ll take a turn at all your little holes before giving you away to my men.”

He’s close enough that I can feel his cock hardening against my hip. His grip around my neck tightens even more, and my vision starts to go spotty. With a final rush of adrenaline, I gather the very last of my strength and drive my knee up. Right between his legs.

His grip around my throat immediately releases, and I’m able to suck in a lungful of air while he doubles over with an earth-shattering groan.

“You sick fuck! Let’s see how you like it,” I growl, gripping the back of his head and slamming his face down into my knee like I saw in a self-defense vid once.

I wince at the sick crunch that must be his nose breaking, followed by his agonizing scream of pain. Shoving him away, he crumples to the ground, and I bolt for the door. My fingers scramble for the release, and I heave a sigh of relief when it opens easily. Except then I come face to face with a surprised-looking orc on the other side.

His beady eyes dart behind me to where Kurrahstka is writhing on the ground, howling in pain. One bloody hand cups his face, the other between his legs.

“You wanna be next?” I ask when he drags his shocked gaze back to me.

My fists are balled up tight at my sides, and I’m ready for his next move.

Or I think I am.

When he pulls a blaster, every muscle in my body tenses, and I prepare to fight and run. Except, instead of pointing it at me, he holds it out to me.

“Finish him.”

For a long time, I stare at the blaster and then back at the orc. Until finally he grabs my hand and pushes the blaster into it. “Shoot him and let’s go.”

“Why?” I ask him.

The orc nods his boxy chin. “You’ve earned the honor for the wrongs that have been done to you.”

I don’t try to pretend that I understand as my hand starts to shake, but before I can talk myself out of it, I turn around and aim the blaster at Kurrahstka. I fire twice before the blaster falls from my suddenly numb fingers to the ground. My abused stomach is already roiling, and I turn away before the sight of what I’ve just done really hits me and I vomit.

“Good. Now, let’s go,” the orc says and starts down the hallway without waiting to see if I’m following.

“Go where?” I ask as I stumble after him.
