CHAPTERTHIRTY-SIX

Shae

* * *

For the millionth time, my eyes flick up to the clock on the wall that I can’t read.

Volethos has been in surgery for hours.

Voirn—the doctor Zell contacted—was waiting for us the moment we landed on Pamia, a desert planet well known for taking in strays seeking asylum. Voirn is Vam’ill, a huge seven-foot lional alien known for being warriors. However, the doctor, despite his size, is surprisingly soft-spoken and knowledgeable, which quickly put me at ease. Or, at least as much at ease as possible.

We transported Volethos directly from the medbot to a stasis chamber and then straight to surgery, where he’s been ever since.

Danielle has been in and out of the waiting area. Checking on me. Making sure I’m drinking water. Assuring me everything is going well. God, I don’t know what I’d do without her. Even though I’ve been mostly ignoring her, and everyone else, since Volethos got hurt.

I look up at the clock again, and I can’t remember what the characters looked like the last time I looked. Have they even changed? Leaning forward, I drop my head into my hands. God, I swear time is moving backward!

“Shae?” Danielle calls to me softly from the door. “How are you doing, hon?”

My head rolls on my neck, and I look over at her. “Hanging in there.” I shrug.

“How about a distraction?”

Before I can respond to that, she pushes the door wide, and a line of women file in. It takes me a moment to realize Irecognize them. Or at least some of them.

“Hi, Shae,” a small brown-haired woman says with a wave. “Remember me?”

I frown, because I do… but it takes me a moment to place from where.

She laughs at my confusion. “That’s okay. You’ve got a lot going on, and the last time you saw me in person, I looked like shit.”

Then it hits me. “Oh, my god! Bela!”

When she nods, I jump to my feet and wrap my arms around her. “You’re really okay!”

“Yeah, more than okay.” She bites her lip and giggles.

When I step back, I realize there is a pretty substantial bump between us. “Shit! You’re pregnant?”

“Yup. And happily mated to the guy who rescued Skylar and me.”

I turn my head to where she points at a young woman. I remember Skylar being a gawky teenager, but now… she’s really blossomed.

“Damn, how long has it been?” I turn and wrap Skylar in a firm hug. When I pull back, I look up at her and frown—was she always this tall? “You’re not mated and pregnant too, are you?”

The poor girl blanches white and shakes her head vehemently. “No! No, definitely not!”

Thank God.

“Although, these aliens are a virile group,” another woman speaks up.

I follow the voice to a small blonde woman. She has a hand resting on her very rounded belly, and she looks like she’s about to pop at any moment. “Hi, I’m Anna. I was abducted shortly before your group was,” she explains. “Mine and Bela’s mates, and Igid here, are bounty hunters who happened to take down the slave ship I was on.”

I look behind her at a tall blue female standing off to the side, watching all of us with wide blue eyes. A small dark head is peeking out of a pouch strapped to her chest.

“Jesus, is there something in the water that makes you guys extra fertile or something?”

Igid’s lips quirk at the sides. “Something like that. Volethos is a friend of mine from my childhood. I hope you don’t mind; I came as soon as I heard.”
