CHAPTERTHIRTY-SEVEN

Volethos

* * *

Iam never drinking again, I think as I slowly drag myself toward consciousness.

My mouth is dry, and my head is pounding. Actually, everything is pounding. Well, everything but my cock. My nostrils flare when I draw in a lung full of air. Her scent is there, and so I relax some. Wait, my female is close by, so whyisn’tmy cock throbbing? I feel like it should be.

I draw in another breath. There is something wrong with the other scents in the air. They are…unfamiliar.

I try to open my eyes, but my lids may as well be glued shut.

My hands twitch, and when I try to lift them, they’re weighted down.

I open my mouth, but my tongue is dry.

“Shae.” Her name squeezes up my throat and escapes as little more than a rasp.

Something is very wrong.

I try to lift my arms again. I need to rub my eyes and get them open, but nothing is working right. I finally get one arm to move, only to have it snag on something that pulls painfully at my skin.

What the f—

“Shae!” This time my voice carries, and I feel the bed dip beside me.

“Volethos?” she sounds sleepy, like I woke her.

I tug at my arm again, pulling at whatever is binding me.

“No, no. Don’t pull—here, let me.”

I settle at the feeling of her hands on my arm. She’s unwrapping something, and then I have more movement.

“I can’t see,” I moan, still struggling to get my lids to peel open. “Can’t seeyou.”

“Shhh,” she says gently. “They must have taped you. Here, let me.”

I flinch when I feel something cool and damp touch my face.

“Sorry,” she apologizes and then strokes the cloth across my eyes. “There, now try.”

My lids feel like they weigh tons, but finally I get one to crack. Everything is blurry.

“Shae?” I whisper again.

An unfocused blob drifts into my murky vision, and her small, warm fingers curl around my hands. “I’m here. See? I’m right here.”

I blink and blink. My other lid comes unglued, and I blink some more beforefinallymy vision starts to focus, and her beautiful face crystalizes before me.

Vittu, she looks exhausted.

“What’s wrong, kurriel?” I manage to lift my arm high enough that I can cup the side of her face.

“Nothing,” she whispers, leaning her cheek into my palm and closing her eyes. “Nothing is wrong. Everything is perfect now.”

I don’t miss thenowpart. “What happened? Where am I?”
