"Khala." Was that what Zared called her? "Khala, you can come out. If you don't, I'm coming in after you."

"You can't have her," Zared snarled. "Stay down."

She stood, a vision of plastered cotton and hair, curves and hardened nipples. And defiance.

My treacherous cock twitched in response to her.

She's a human, I reminded myself again. A fucking gorgeous one, Haldor help me.

She raised her hands to sign but stopped, her hands out in front of her. "That Fae woman is Dalyth?"

"The one and only," I said wryly.

"What does she want with my sisters?" Her eyes flicked back the way we'd all come, towards the road.

"It's a long story." I shook my head. "We don't have time."

"What did she want?" Khala insisted. "My sisters are supposed to go to Havenmoor."

Figured that not only was she a human, she was a particularly stubborn specimen.

"Dalyth won't be taking them to Havenmoor," I said simply. "And you won't be going either. For your safety. We can protect you, but you have to come with us."

"One of my sisters, Tyla—"

I shook my head again. "There's nothing we can do for her now."

"But I can't just—" she started to argue.

"We're outnumbered," I said coldly. "If we go after them now, we're all dead. We need to plan and gather more of my men. Dalyth has no intention of killing them." What she did might be far worse than that.

I was done arguing. "Let's go." I nodded in a westerly direction.

"You're not taking her." Zared stepped out from behind the fern, the sword still firmly held in his grip.

"I can assure you, we're doing exactly that," I told him coldly. "I strongly advise you against trying to stop us." If he thought we'd hesitate to kill him, he'd have to think again. We needed her, not him. It might be better if we dispensed with him and got it over with. I suspected that would make Khala more difficult to handle. With humans, you had to tread carefully.

"I'll go," she said quickly. "But only if you promise not to kill him. And that as soon as we can, we'll go after Tyla."

"This is not a negotiation, human," Vayne growled.

I raised my hand to silence him.

"Deal, on the condition you do what I say, when I say. If you don't, you'll end up dead, and I can't guarantee it will be Dalyth doing the killing."

In the corner of my eye, I saw Tavian rubbing his hands together. Subtle, very subtle.

Khala lifted her chin. "Fine. Are we going to stand here all day?"

Tavian laughed.

I ignored him, along with her suggestion that we were the ones causing the delay. I gave her an ironic bow and gestured in the direction I needed her to go.

"After you, my lady." I smiled sarcastically.

She narrowed her eyes at me, but finally started moving the way I’d gestured. Thank the gods. I was just about to throw her over my shoulder and carry her. It would serve her right if I did.

Zared hesitated for a moment longer, then put away his sword and hurried to walk beside her. His hand found her back in a gesture that was as possessive as it was pointless.
