I couldn’t tell if he was asking from curiosity, sarcasm or even accusation.

Ryze chuckled. "Do you think we contributed to the extinction of dragons?” He grinned broadly. “Dragons don’t exist. They have never existed. They're a myth, like sea goats, tangie—"

"And humans that aren't as irritating as shit?" Vayne asked.

I gave him the gesture for fuck off.

He sneered in response.

"I might be cranky too if I was as old as him," I signed to Tavian.

He laughed. "I would be too," he said out loud. "On the other hand, he's been as cranky as that since I met him."

"What does that tell you?" Vayne asked. "I was all sunshine and rainbows before I met you. Everything went downhill after that."

"I'm starting to think Dalyth might be a better option," Zared said.

Tavian actually looked offended. "You think death would be better than walking through a forest with us?"

Zared gave him a, 'what do you think,' look, with no attempt to hide his disgust.

"We can arrange that," Ryze said.

"Can I, please?" Vayne asked.

Ryze hesitated.

"No, you cannot," I said firmly. "Can't you just be nice to each other?" All of this arguing and animosity was becoming exhausting. The last day had been tiring enough. "We must be nearly at Riverrest?"

Ryze tilted his head back and looked up at the thinning canopy.

"Yes we are. In fact, this is close enough."

"Close enough for what? Zared asked. He raised his hands to either side and turned around in a circle slowly. "We're still in the middle of the forest."

"Perfect." Ryze swung his pack of his back and hand to Vayne. "There's no one here to see us."

My heart skipped. Was this where the Fae disposed of us and left our bodies to become part of the forest?

"The river is nearby," Ryze continued. "I needed that to do this."

He raised his hands out in front of him, palms forward. His eyes half closed.

"What—" I started.

Tavian put a hand on my arm. "Just watch."

The air was suddenly chill, like a blast of ice. This skin on my arms pebbled. Thankfully my clothes were dry now, because they might have froze to my body.

A white line appeared in the air in front of us. It hovered just above the ground before it started to open like two doors joined in the centre. In a moment or two, I made out a passage beyond the doors. Floor, ceiling and walls were all white, glistening.

The wider the doors opened, the colder the air that came from inside.

"Is that—" I frowned.

"Ice," Tavian agreed. "It's a portal home."
