They say no beauty can compare to a Fae woman, but this human woman was captivating. She was dainty, but strong, and her hair— I wanted to tangle my fingers in there. Drown in her eyes.

No, I didn't need any herbs. Looking at her made my cock harder.

The way she smiled while Tavian and I teased each other made me hate myself for what we were going to do to her. WhatIwas going to do to her.

When Zared almost broke my chair, I was tempted to open the window and throw him out. I restrained myself both for her sake and because he was also torn out of his own life and brought here.

In spite of being told repeatedly he didn't have to come, he never really had a choice. The fact he was in love with Khala was obvious to everyone. I wouldn't let her out of my sight either if I was him, especially around dubious characters like Tavian and Vayne.

Vayne in particular. His bark was much worse than his bite. I'd seen him taking glances at her when he thought no one was watching. He was outspoken in his dislike of humans, but that was a cover for indifference at worst and curiosity at best.

I cleared my throat. "The Silent Maidens were created by the Fae. That is to say, it was the Fae who first recognised certain qualities in young women. For their protection, they were taken aside.Chosen, if you will."

My eyes settled on Khala, whose mouth twitched at the word.

"What qualities?" she asked carefully.

I would have welcomed an interruption from Tavian or Vayne, but for once it didn't come. Of course they'd leave this to me. Assholes.

"They were all suspected to be omegas," I said finally. I let the silence hang, ringing louder than a temple bell.

"Omegas are a myth," Zared scoffed. His eyes didn't look so sure. "They're as real as dragons."

"Dragonsare myth," I said slowly. "I assure you, omegas are not. Neither are alphas." I said that with as little inflection as I could, but I watched as my words sunk in.

"What is an omega?" Khala asked. She looked confused, scared. I wanted to pull her into my arms and reassure her, but I couldn't do that. Not yet.

Her eyes went from me to Zared and back again.

It was Zared who responded. "They're people who…go into heat. Like a bitch. According to the legends, they were created by the gods for their amusement."

That sounded like something the gods would do. His words did nothing to settle her confusion though.

She shook her head. "I don't understand. What does that have to do with me? Or any of this?"

"Everything," I said. "The maidens took any suspected omegas aside and did what they could to suppress their heat until those girls were women."

She looked at me with a furrowed brow.

"The amethyst chokers the maidens wear,” I explained. “The amethyst, specifically, has the property to keep an omega from her heat."

"Or his," Tavian said.

I nodded towards him. "Or his," I agreed. "But male omegas are even more rare than female ones."

"But the chokers stopped us from talking," Khala said.

I smiled humourlessly. "Just a strange side-effect of the amethyst. The gods only know why it does that."

"You think Khala is an omega?" Zared looked like he might open the window and throwmeout.

I shook my head. "No. I know she is. Just like I know I'm an alpha."

Zared's face turned pink with fury. "Is that why you brought her here? For your own amusement?"

"For her ownsafety," I said calmly. "Dalyth is taking the rest of them to the Summer Court. As she has done for several years now. The rumours of what happens there… I couldn't let them take another batch of girls."

"The women who aren't maidens anymore, go to the temple for training," Khala said, her brow still just as creased.
