"The same way females do," Tavian said softly. "An alpha's touch close to heat." He gave me a glance.

I returned it with a soft smile.

Khala's mouth formed an O. "You two…"

"That's how I know Ryze knows how to take care of an omega," Tavian said. "Believe me, you could do a lot worse."

"If anyone gives a shit, I'm a beta," Vayne growled. "Which doesn't mean my dick doesn't work." He gave us all a collective scowl.

"No one thought it didn’t," I assured him.

"I suspected it might." Tavian grinned.

Vayne gave him a rude gesture with his middle finger.

"It's some consolation that they don't give each other any respect either," I said to Khala.

She smiled, but still looked troubled.

I uncrossed my legs and leaned towards her, hands on my thighs. "I know all of this is a lot to take in." I glanced up towards Zared, including him in my sympathy. "It's going to take some time to get used to, but you're stronger than you think you are. None of us are the monsters you were probably led to believe."

Zared made a sound of disbelief, which I ignored.

"What about Tyla?" she asked. "What if she's an omega too? They'll take her to the Summer Court? They'll have an alpha there? What will happen to her?"

I exchanged glances with Tavian, because this was exactly what we were discussing before she entered the room.

I looked back at her. "I don't know," I admitted. "The rumours of anything going on there might just be that. Rumours. Cavan, the High Lord of Summer, isn't known for being a reasonable, sympathetic man. All the more reason to make a move and get her out of there as soon as we can, but that has to wait until after your heat. We can't risk you being anywhere near him when that happens."

"But if she goes into—" Khala started.

I interrupted her. "If we could take the risk, I'd do it in a heartbeat. We can't."

"Don't you have people you can send?" Zared asked. “You are the High Lord of the Winter Court."

I glanced up at him and raised an eyebrow. "Am I? I had forgotten.” As if I possibly could. People liked reminding me all too often.

“For your information, I prefer not to send my people to a place I wouldn't go myself. Not to mention the simple fact doing so may be seen as an act of war. Unless you'd like to provoke one of those, then we'll have to wait." I hated to do that to Khala, but war was a million times worse than what might happen to one woman, gorgeous though she was. Especially given what would happen to multiple women as a result of the conflict. The needs of the many had to outweigh the needs of the one, as they said.

Zared shrugged and paced away across to the other side of the room.

I rubbed a hand across my forehead. "I think that's enough talk for one day. After all that, I need a drink." I rose and walked to the bar in the corner, which contained several bottles of alcohol and enough glasses for half an army.

I poured myself a glass of whiskey and turned around to see Tavian grinning.

He stretched out and put a hand on Khala's arm. "Watch this."

I gave him a droll look. "So glad to be your party trick." I shook my head but half closed my eyes and drew water to me from a nearby tap. I froze it and shaped it, so when it reached my hand, it was formed into two, neat cubes. I tipped my hand so they both fell into my whiskey with a plop.

I took a sip and gave them all a sarcastic bow.

Everyone but Zared clapped. He gave me a look like he thought it was a waste of magic.

He was probably right. Whatever, I liked ice in my whiskey.

"How do you do that?" Khala asked.

I slipped back into my chair. "It's basic magic. I can't remember a time when I couldn't do it. I never think of it as a big deal until other people make it into one." I shot Tavian a meaningful look.
