"It might be better if—"

"I'm asking you," I insisted.

He hesitated. Sighed. Twitched back the edge of the curtain.

"It might be better if you see for yourself." His tone was chilling. A shaft of fear slid all the way through me, from my head to my bare toes.

I pressed a hand to my belly. As far as I could tell, I wasn't pregnant with some human-Fae child that shattered me upon conception. Thank the gods.

How bad could it be then? Very, judging by the way Tavian behaved.

I moved my hand from my belly to push the curtain back further.

I stopped and stared.

What in the name of all the hells?

It wasn't my hand. The fingers were longer, more slender and elegant.

I made a fist.

The fingers curled into a fist.

"What is happening?" I asked in a terrified whisper.

I felt him being fearful for me.

I felt. Him. Being fearful. For me. Ihadn'timagined that.

"You should look in the mirror," he said. "I can bring one to you. You'll still be weak after the fever." Before I could respond, he all but lept out of the nest and trotted away.

He returned a minute or two later, a mirror double the size of his head, in his hands.

His trembling hands.

He held it up in front of my face.

I stared at the reflection. The reflection of a stranger.

She had some of the same features as me. The same straight, blonde hair. The same eye colour. Her eyes were slanted like a cat. Her chin was pointed. Her eyebrows were perfect curves. And her ears… Her ears were elegantly pointed at the tips. Like a Fae.

Her tongue slid over her lips at the same time mine did.

"Oh gods." My breath misted the mirror.

I touched my cheek. "What did you do to me?" Ice cold fear crept through me. Along with the realisation I was looking at myself. Khala, but different.

I looked like Fae.

Ryze appeared in the doorway. He skidded to a stop at the sight of me. I felt his relief at seeing me awake, but no part of him was surprised. A whisper of anxiety was quickly brushed away. In its place, was the usual arrogant, slightly amused High Lord. His arms at his sides, he sauntered over to the bed.

"Well," he said with a smile. "You're looking much better."

"What the fuck did you do to me?" I demanded.

Ryze leaned over and placed a hand on my forehead. "You had a fever, my dear. A very high one. You've been out for a few days."

I flinched away from him. "That much I know. I remember the pain. Everything else is hazy. And when I look in the mirror, I see…someone else." I struggled to hold back anger and tears. "What did youdo?"
