I let out a squeak and jumped back.

"Fuck. I'm guessing that wasn't supposed to happen."

I glanced over to see him looking perplexed.

"I've never seen that happen before. The portal should stay open until you close it. Or until you're exhausted. Are you feeling all right?"

"I'm a little tired," I admitted. "What would have happened if I stepped inside that?"

He shook his head. "I have no idea." He rubbed his pointed chin with his hand. "That might be a question for another day. Don't try that again unless I'm present."

My skin tingled. His words wrapped around me, tightened. "Is that an order from an alpha to an omega?"

He smiled slightly. "It wasn't intended to be, but yes, treat it like that. For your safety. Until we can ascertain why it went wrong and how to fix it. We don't want you getting stuck in the space between one location and another, if such a place even exists. I strongly suspect that if it does, it would suck."

"I don't doubt that for a moment," I said.

"Itold you you should tell her," Vayne said, over the top of his beer glass.

"If I recall correctly, you said something along the lines of her only being a human and I should explain what we were using her for," I said coolly. "You weren't giving her any consideration or credit for her intelligence."

"Same thing," he said unapologetically. "I hardly knew the woman but I figured she'd want to know what the fuck you were up to."

"That didn't stop you from enjoying her mouth." I sipped my whiskey and watched his expression. If he was surprised I knew, he gave no sign.

"That was after I got to know her," he said unapologetically. "And before she changed. No one can say I wasn't into her before she was Fae."

"She was always Fae," I said wearily.

"None of us knew that for sure," he pointed out. "Now we know, what are we going to do? With her, and with others like her."

"I've sent word to a contact in the Summer Court," I said. "I'd like to wrangle an invitation, but I suspect we may have to sneak in."

"That's one of my favourite pastimes," Tavian said. He sat on a chair in the corner, an almost untouched beer in his hand. "Sneaking, killing, and fucking. Not necessarily in that order."

"I know," I told him. "You're very good at all three of them. I suspect you'll get a chance at more of the first two soon enough."

I didn't want to talk about the third one. Every time I thought about it, I thought about Khala and the way she looked at me like I was some kind of monster. I dared to hope she might forgive me someday, but it wouldn't be anytime soon. I'd have to work hard to regain her trust and right now, I wasn't sure I could spare the time. We needed to move, and soon.

"I know we've talked about me sneaking into the Summer Court and assassinating the High Lord," Tavian started.

"No," I said simply and firmly.

Of course, he wasn't immediately done arguing the point. "It would solve a lot of problems."

"And create even more," I said. "Have you forgotten I'm attempting to avoid provoking a full-blown war?" Just because it was becoming more and more inevitable didn't mean I'd stop trying.

"Maybe it's gone past that," Vayne said. "Kidnapping omegas to fuck with the weather seems pretty provocative to me."

"To me too," Tavian said.

"An army camped on our border would be provocative," I said. "Are you two bloodthirsty or bored? Remind me to give you both extra duties."

"It might be that you're getting soft in your old age," Vayne said. "You say you'll do anything to stop whatever Cavan is up to, but what if that means striking first? What if sitting up here, enjoying the view and twiddling our thumbs is the wrong thing to do?"
