"Enjoying sex doesn't indicate an omega," Ryze said. "It means you're a normal, healthy young woman who enjoys sex. There's nothing wrong with that, anymore than there is anything wrong with not wanting to partake. For the record, enjoying sex doesn't mean someone is an alpha either. It also doesn't mean they're not."

"Except during heat," I said.

"Except then," he agreed. "For some omegas and alphas, that's the only time they're ever with a partner. It's not always ideal, who the gods decide has which designation. Some make the choice not to take part, or to remove themselves from a heat, simply because they don't want to be intimate. It's an easier choice for an alpha to make than for any omega."

"Has anyone ever tried to make an artificial knot?" Zared asked, his gaze intent on Ryze. I could almost see him thinking if there was such a thing, Ryze wouldn't need to touch me again. Thinking and hoping.

"Tried, but not with any great success," Ryze said. "No substance locks and vibrates the way a knot does. And before you suggest it, cutting off an alpha's cock is no replacement."

"Have you tried that?" Zared asked. The hope was gone but his snark remained. "Because you seem open to trying new things."

Ryze chuckled. "No. I'm very attached to that part of my body. I'd rather offer my arm." He held one up. "It's almost as thick. My thigh might be better."

Vayne snorted the loudest of all of us.

Ryze pretended to look offended. As thick as his cock was, it wasn'tthatthick. Not nearly as big as his ego or arrogance. Those were big enough to fill an entire city.

"Usually, they find an alpha they can tolerate and do what has to be done," Ryze said finally.

His words sat heavily over us while we walked in silence in the relentless warmth of the afternoon. I was lost deep in my thoughts, echoes of what Ryze said restless in my mind.

Find an alpha they can tolerate. Was that what this might come down to if I didn’t forgive Ryze, or if he wasn’t around for my next heat? Just find some alpha to fuck? Any alpha?

It wasn’t that simple, not for me. He was right, I’d want someone I could tolerate. Someone I’d want to be locked with. Someone I’d welcome in my nest. If it wasn’t Ryze, I’d have to find another alpha. Someone outside my pack. That idea didn’t sit well with me either. I sighed at how something that should be easy was actually complicated.

Gradually, I became aware of a change in the air. A new smell. The sound of rapidly moving water. My Fae senses were acute enough to pick up both long before I saw the source. A river, approximately forty metres wide. It flowed steadily, like liquid glass, the scent cool and fresh.

If not for the current, I would have been tempted to jump in and swim. The swiftness would have swept me away in moments.

We stopped at the edge.

"There's a bridge downriver." Vayne looked displeased. More than usual. "It's always heavily patrolled."

"Want to try your hand at making a bridge?" Ryze asked me. He gave me an, 'it's all yours,' gesture with his hand. "Don't forget to put sides on it. Ice is, after all, slippery."

"Ryze learnt that the hard way," Tavian said with a grin.

"Yes I did, thank you." Ryze smirked at Tavian. "I slipped off and fell into the river. I should point out, I was young at the time. Somewhere around a hundred. At least I learnt my lesson. However, I regret telling you that story." He pointed accusingly at Tavian.

I tore my eyes from Tavian's grin and looked out across the river. It suddenly seemed a hundred metres wide, from bank to bank.

"Just make the water rise and freeze it how you need it," Ryze instructed.

He made it sound so basic, like turning on a tap. There was no way it would be that easy. I considered telling him to do it himself and I’d watch and learn. Stubbornness made me nod. It couldn’t hurt to try. After a quick prayer to Breia.

My tongue darted over my lips. "All right." I can do this. Please don’t let me make a total fool of myself.

I focused on the water, made it rise, but not too quickly. The last thing I wanted was to be covered in an entire river. They'd tease me about it for the next four or five hundred years. The fact they'd be drenched too was no consolation.

A small fountain of water rose, bit by bit. It hovered a handspan over the water. I tried to freeze it. Just a little, tiny exertion of pressure…

Instead of freezing over like the bridge I pictured in my mind, an elegant arch to span the river, a huge vertical section became a wall of ice. It climbed several metres up in the air. So high it blocked the flow of the river.

In a moment or two, the riverbed was exposed, a wide section which stretched all the way to the opposite side of the river. Rocks and pebbles lined the muddy bed, worn smooth from the flow of water.
