"So hospitable," I said sarcastically. "Fine, we're leaving." I had no concern that he might carry out his threat. I could make a portal and be gone in the blink of an eye. And Wornar with me. We all knew it. The threat was empty, if somewhat aggressive.

"Let's go," Wornar said.

"With pleasure," I said. "The sooner we're out of this city, the better." The sooner Khala was out of Garial, the happier I'd be. While I was worried for Tavian, Vayne and even Zared, I was more worried for her. That worry was increased with the almost certainty her sisters were here against their wills. She wanted to see them for herself, but if I could give her some reassurance I'd seen them and they were content, that might have to be enough.

I had a decision to make. Did I tell her the truth and risk her running off trying to find them, or did I lie to her again and risk her hating me when she found out?

That was a no win situation if there ever was one. Unless I could convince her to let the matter go. Griffins would grow three tails before that happened. Two of them was probably enough.

"Ryze," Cavan said before I stepped out the door.

I forced a smile to my face and turned around.

"There's one small matter that slipped my mind." He stepped around the table towards me, hands clasped in front of him. "I also listen to rumours. Especially ones regarding transformed omegas. According to whispers, you have one with you in the Winter Court."

I froze. I should have expected him to know something about Khala. Why wouldn't he, when we had people sniffing around his court?

"I see you know what I'm referring to." He looked smug. "Or should I say, who."

I forced myself to stay calm, although I wanted to drive a shard of ice through his heart for even talking about her.

I shrugged. "What of it? She's there of her own free will."

"Is she?" Cavan exchanged amused glances with Harel.

That look turned my blood to ice.

"Unlike you, I don't need to lock women away," I said as coolly as I could.

"I'm sure you don't." Cavan looked bored.

I wished he'd get to the point.

"But the fact of the matter is, she's not at the Winter Court," Cavan said. "She's here."

"She might have accompanied me to the Summer Court," I said carefully.

"No," he said slowly as if I was being deliberately stupid. "I mean, she'shere. Leaving her in that inn was an oversight on your part."

"It's the first time I've ever seen you make a joke," I said with half a chuckle. I sent off a quick plea to the gods that hewasjoking.

He laughed. When he stopped laughing, he nodded to a couple of guards who stood in front of the same door the tea and cake was brought in through.

They opened the door. Someone I couldn't see shoved Khala through it. Her hands were bound and gagged tied over her luscious mouth. Tears slipped down her cheeks.

Even like that she was gorgeous, and clearly furious.

"Like I said, she's here."

Khala

"This is bullshit," Zared growled. He paced back and forth across the room. "There must be something we can do."

"There will be," I said. "Right now there isn't. Except to wait patiently."

He turned slightly accusing hazel eyes on me. "You have changed. The old Khala would have been climbing the walls with me."
