Still, the blank expression on his face was seared into my soul forever.

I forced the thought aside for now. If I let it linger in my mind too much, I was going to cry. The time for that would come later.

Hycanthe ignored the question. "You came here because you didn't know it was us. You thought Tyla was here, or you wouldn't have come. Would you?"

The glance Jezalyn gave her omega was the most alpha-like expression I’d ever seen on her face. It reminded me so much of Ryze, my heart twinged.

I hadn't entirely forgiven him for lying to me, for not telling me I may transform into Fae, but he was still my alpha, a part of my pack. He'd agreed to let me come, orchestrating the situation to look like Cavan took me against my will.

"You and I haven't always gotten along," I signed. "But Ryze is convinced Cavan is planning something that will end up in an all-out war. I came here because I care about my sisters and because I don't want hundreds, thousands of people to die."

"Sounds like a no to me," Hycanthe muttered out loud.

"Hycanthe has magic," Jezalyn signed. "I don't. All the omegas here do. To varying degrees of skill."

Hycanthe huffed.

"I'm still learning to use mine too." There was no shame in my admission that I needed the practice.

"I almost set one of the guards on fire," Hycanthe said, as though throwing down a challenge.

"I almost drowned one of my lovers because I couldn't make an ice bridge properly," I said.

She pursed her lips and sighed.

I think I won that round.

I cocked my head at Hycanthe. "You have Summer Court magic. Have you tried to open a portal?"

"Yes." She shrugged. "They made Jezalyn order me not to make one without Cavan's permission."

"It stayed open?" I asked. "You could walk through it?"

Hycanthe looked confused. "Yes. Isn't that the point?"

"Supposedly." I briefly explained that mine snapped shut before I could step through, and the sensation that something was missing with my magic.

"Maybe you should stay here," Hycanthe said. "That High Lord of yours doesn't seem like a good teacher to me."

I shifted uncomfortably at her criticism of Ryze. "It's not that. I just…need to work on it. That's all."

Hycanthe smirked.

"Do you have any idea what Cavan is up to?" I signed.

Jezalyn shook her head. "We haven't seen much of him since we arrived. Mostly, we see Dalyth. She's the one who teaches the omegas how to use their magic."

"Has she taught you how to change people's memories?" I asked Hycanthe.

"No. Not beyond watching her do it to Tyla and the other sisters." Hycanthe flopped down onto the bench on the other side of Jezalyn. "Mostly I spend my time lighting candles." She curled her lip.

"Lighting candles is a useful skill," Jezalyn told her. "I can't do it." She shot her omega an affectionate look.

"You two transitioned at the same time," I realised. "That must have been horrible." Mine was bad enough and I had Zared and Tavian to cool me down, and Ryze and Vayne to watch over me. All they had was each other.

Jezalyn laced her fingers in Hycanthe's. "It wasn't easy. I kept telling the staff to look after her, but she wouldn't let any of them touch her."

"I wanted them to look after you too," Hycanthe argued. "Theywerethe strangers who kidnapped us from the caravan."
