She nodded. "I can do it, if you promise me you'll be safe."

I kissed her mouth quickly. "I always do." I let her wrists go and started out of the library at a trot. I was used to dealing with all sorts of shit, but this had me on edge. Whatever I saw, whoever those people were, had something to do with this. I was certain of it.

I slowed to a walk before I stepped out into the sunshine.

Into chaos.

Like in the Summer Court barracks, Fae ran back and forth. There, it was from fear. Here, it was with purpose.

They ran to refill buckets, to throw water on fires that blazed in the trees and various buildings. Debris lay everywhere. Branches, brooms, random pieces of cloth, what looked like a smashed wagon.

I grabbed the arm of a young man as he ran past.

"What the hells is going on?" I asked.

"A huge whirlwind," he panted. "Came through from the sea. Grabbed up everything in its path and threw it around like it was nothing. Then it was gone."

"Any flashes of light?"

He gave me a funny look. "Not that I saw. I saw the wind and ran like hells until it was gone. Now it's got things on fire." He nodded towards another wagon, this one fully ablaze.

I nodded. "Go." I dropped my hand and he went on running.

I supposed it could have been a coincidence, an act of nature or the gods. My instincts told me otherwise.

I was about to head inside when a portal opened beside me. Ryze, Cavan and Vayne stepped out so fast Ryze almost barrelled into me.

He grabbed me at the last moment. "What the fuck happened?"

I told him what the young man told me.

"No winter magic can do that," he said.

"Not summer either," Cavan said. "A combination of it can."

"Khala was with me. She didn't do it," I said quickly.

Ryze eyed Cavan. "Where was Dalyth?"

"Training the other omegas," Cavan said coolly. "Hycanthe isn't strong enough to do something like this."

I wanted to contradict him, but not in front of Ryze and not after telling Khala I wouldn't say anything to anyone about Hycanthe's magic getting stronger during yesterday's attack.

"We don't get whirlwinds at random here in Lysarial," Ryze said.

"I think we can all agree it wasn't anything random," Cavan said wearily.

"Nothing happened here yesterday," Vayne said. "I've spoken to my second-in-command, she said it was as boring as shit. If this was the same asshole as in Garial, then I suggest they're following one of you around."

"They might be followingyouaround," I pointed out. "You are pretty cute." I couldn’t resist the flirt, if only to see the expression on his face. He was too easy to rile.

Vayne snorted. "Yes I am, but they can fuck off. I'm not interested."

Ryze patted him on the shoulder. "You'd have to be slightly flattered if they've gone to all this trouble to get your attention. Wouldn't you?"

Vayne jerked away. "It's not about me," he growled. "Tavian was the one Illaria tried to keep away from the barracks. Maybe it's about him. Or you," he said to Ryze. He glared at Cavan but didn't say anything further. He didn’t need to. It was obvious to everyone where he thought the blame really lay.

"Extreme heat and high wind," Cavan said thoughtfully. "Both destructive forces."
