"More than I'd like to admit," Cavan said. "Humans are a twitchy bunch at best."

"And at worst?" I asked. I was half-human after all.

"At worst, they'll happily kill any Fae they see, just for sport. They won't stop to see if they recognise you. Were they to do that, they may suspect we did something to you to make you one of us."

Tavian grinned. "We did do something to her. I think she liked it."

I felt a tug on the bond and froze. "It's Zared."

"Where?" Ryze asked.

"Not far," I replied. "Up ahead. But he's upset, excited, angry. He's coming this way. I think they know we're here."

"Are you ready to dodge more arrows?" Ryze asked Cavan.

"If I have to," Cavan said. "It would be better to slip around them. Stay out of their way. We can get into Havenmoor, look at the temple and get back out again."

Ryze considered for a moment, then nodded. "Everyone off the road. We'll go through the bushes." He waved us ahead of him.

I gave him a pleading look, but he waved me off too.

"You heard what Cavan said. They won't look twice at any of us, including you. That bond might be confusing the hells out of him."

Reluctantly, I followed the others into the thick bushes, and kept low, close to Tavian.

"It'll be all right," he whispered.

I didn't know what he was basing that on, because right now it didn't feel all right.

"The smoke was coming from around here," a voice said.

Zared.

"It might be nothing," another voice said.

"I'm telling you, Ianic, there's something fucked as hells going on," Zared insisted. "It wasn't a random event. I can't explain how I know, but I know."

He stopped in front of the bushes. He was close enough to touch. Close enough to smell his cedar scent. He turned his face.

I’d swear he looked right at me.

"I don't see anything," Ianic said. "It was probably nothing more nefarious than a hunter cooking a rabbit."

"You're right," Zared said a bit too quickly. "I'm sure it was nothing. Let's get back to the temple. Tyla is probably waiting for you to fuck her mouth again."

Ianic chuckled. "She does like being on her knees."

I stiffened at the way they were talking about my friend. Not because I was ashamed of anything she did with Ianic, or anyone else, but he didn't seem to have much respect for her.

"You go on ahead," Zared said. "I'm going to take a piss."

"All right. I don't want to keep her and her mouth waiting." Ianic's footsteps crunched away down the road.

I held my breath while Zared stepped in front of the bush again.
