"No, I figured we'd work it out as we went along. Harel and everyone else turned in hours ago. Judging by the amount of wine they drank, they won't be up early, so we have some time. We need to keep an eye out for guards. Whatever I say, play along."

"Why do I think that sounds like the start of a very bad idea?" I asked.

He smiled before he opened the door and stepped out, leaving me to scurry along behind him.

Like he did everywhere else, he strode along like he owned the place. Between him and Ryze, they had at least three quarters of the confidence that existed in the seasonal courts.

We approached a couple of guards who were patrolling the corridor. Against what, I didn't know. People like us, I supposed.

"Hurry up," Cavan snapped over his shoulder. "Unless you enjoyed your punishment for being too slow the last time. I can give you double."

I didn't hate the sound of that, but I kept my eyes down and trotted until I caught up. "Sorry," I muttered.

He stopped so quickly I almost ran into the back of him.

"Sorry what?" he growled.

"Sorry, alpha," I said quickly. Asshole was enjoying this way too much. If he wasn't careful, I'd bite his cock. Not in a good way.

He glared at me, then turned and stomped on.

The guards looked at me and one of them actually chuckled. He was an asshole too.

I followed Cavan around the corner, before punching him in the arm.

"Ouch what was that for?" He rubbed the spot which probably didn't hurt, because I didn't punch himthathard.

"I felt like it," I said. "Are you suggesting you didn't deserve it?"

He grinned. "Stay in your role. You never know when someone else might appear."

"Yes, sir," I said sarcastically. I sighed and slumped back down beside him.

"I like the way that sounds," he said.

"Of course you do," I whispered.

He gestured for me to be quiet as we walked down another corridor and into the one leading to the throne room.

"You'd think he'd keep it somewhere safer, like a treasury," I remarked. "Or under his pillow. No one would want to go there to find it."

"Lucky for you it's not under there," Cavan said. "Otherwise I’d have to send you for it. Whatever happened there, you’d have to play along."

"I'm starting to think the sadistic thing isn't an act," I told him. I was almost certain he didn't mean he’d let Harel do whatever he wanted to me. I sure as hells wouldn't.

"Quiet." He tried the door to the throne room. It was locked. A quick flick of his finger and flare of magic, and it clicked open.

"Locks are only there to keep out honest people and people who can't do magic," he said.

"I know which of those you fit into," I said sweetly.

He snorted.

We stepped inside and he closed the door behind us.

The darkness inside was almost suffocating. The only light came from the moon. It cast an eerie glow through the window, illuminating the room in patches. It was quiet, too quiet. the stillness broken only by the sound of our footsteps on the cold, hard floor.

"I don't know about this," I said. "It feels…"
