She looks down at her purse and rifles through it as she answers, “It’s nothing, just a thank you to Mr. Morosov for inviting me tonight.” She doesn’t look up until she’s done speaking. I smile at her, and we both head out the door.

We ride the private elevator down to the second floor, then we walk over to the stairwell and take it down to the first-floor entrance to the back alley. The only way to get to the third floor directly is the internal elevator in the kitchen, and we didn’t want to go through there. It was explained to me that this was the most secure and most private way. I grip the railing tightly and move slow, afraid I’ll slip and fall or twist my ankle in these heels. When we get to the bottom, I take a deep breath and let out the air before I adjust my coat and hold my clutch in both hands.

As soon as we step into the back alley, I notice both Arkady and Adrik go on attention. Something isn’t right. I peek around their bodies and don’t see the large SUV Andrei said would be waiting. Instead, a small sports car is in its place. A gunshot rings out and Arkady grabs his arm as Adrik grabs for me. His body jolts and the hand touching me jerks. My own body twitches and my eyes roll back for a moment as I crumple to the ground.

“You weren’t supposed to bring a gun,” Lennon yells at someone.

I try to focus on what’s happening, but my brain feels fuzzy. After several blinks, I see Arkady with a gun to his head.

“Are you crazy? These guys are killers,” a male voice I don’t recognize says, and then a pair of legs blocks my view.

“They won’t hurt her, and I don’t want Andrei to come after us. I only hired you because my father wouldn’t have agreed to this. Come on, jerk. Put her in the car.”

The man pauses for a moment. “Give me that,” he orders Lennon, and then I feel another jolt as he sticks a Taser against my arm and fires it off. “There isn’t enough money in the world to go against the Bratva,” the man says as he picks me up. My mind is completely scrambled. I hear them talking around me, but I can’t stop them. I’m set in the passenger seat and then the seat belt is put around me. The guy grabs my breast.

“Hey, don’t touch her.”

“Who’s going to stop me?” He laughs and moves toward her. I hear her struggling and then another gunshot. My body jerks in fear.

The car is in motion, and we are taking off fast.

After what feels like only a few moments, I’m able to talk. I glance out the window and take in my surroundings. From the looks of it, we are no longer in Vegas.

“Why?” My voice cracks.

“I had to get you away from him. He’s dangerous, and as your big sister, I need to protect you.” Lennon looks over at me.

“Did you kill my guards?”

“No. I shot that idiot Daron. He touched you and was trying to hurt me.”

“Andrei is going to find me.” And he might kill her for this.

“By the time he does, we will be far away and you’ll no longer be under his spell. Just because he saved you, it doesn’t mean you have to worship him and be his mistress.”

“I’m going to be his wife.”

She looks up as the interior of the car is flooded with light.

“What is this idiot doing?” she complains, and then the car jolts hard as we are slammed from behind. I stretch my arms out to brace myself, but the belt keeps me from moving. I look at my feet and see my purse. I pick it up and hold it as we are hit again. Lennon grips the steering wheel but loses control of the car. We slide off the road and crash into a ditch. I barely hold on to my bag. I look over at Lennon. She’s breathing hard and trying to get out of the car, but her door won’t open.

My door is yanked open, and I shriek in fear.

“I’ve got you now.”

Lennon screams as I’m pulled from the car and thrown to the ground. I slip my clutch into the pocket of my trench coat as I watch the gun lowered to my face. I turn my head at the last minute, and the slam against my temple knocks me out instantly.

Andrei

Ilook down at my watch, wondering where my girl is. She should have been here already. The team messaged me when they were heading out of the condo, but I haven’t heard from them since. I pull out my phone and send a quick message to her team, asking what’s taking so long. My phone rings, and I see Adrik’s name on the display.

“Da,” I growl into the phone.

“She’s gone. We were attacked by a man who was working for her sister.” He pauses and I’m about to crush my phone under the strain of waiting. “Her sister left a note saying Mistress asked her to take her away from you.”
