“Theo, what are you doing here?”

Rather than go home after his last patient, he went to see Daisy. He just needed to set his eyes on her. He wasn’t sure why, but the big welcoming smile she was sending his way was more than enough.

“Maybe I wanted to come see you. And that I ordered a few pizzas for you and your coworkers.”

“That is so sweet,” Ivy said, moving over. “You’re such a keeper, and I’m Ivy. We haven’t formally met.”

He laughed at the younger woman. The place was pretty busy and had to be if Ivy was filling in since he knew she didn’t work in the shop unless needed.

“That is very sweet of you,” Daisy said. “Give me a minute, could you?”

“Oh, you can talk to your man if you want,” her customer said.

“It’s fine,” he said. “I’ll go get the food and be back in fifteen minutes.”

He walked back out and made his way around the block to get the pizza. There was a bite to the air, but it was welcome after his long day.

The older woman that gave him advice months ago when he and Daisy exchanged numbers was working.

“I haven’t seen you in a while. Have you and Daisy managed to meet up?” the woman asked when he was checking out.

He figured there was no harm in answering. It was a small area. “Yes,” he said. “Matter of fact, these pizzas are for her and her coworkers. They’ve got a late night.”

“I said she was a good girl, but it seems to me you’re good for her too. Enjoy.”

He took his card back and carried the two pizzas back. When he walked in, he was getting comments about him being the hero tonight.

Funny how he never thought of that much in his life. Or when he thought of being a hero it had more to do with saving a woman like he had Heather with Luke. Not bringing in some food.

“This was very nice of you,” Daisy said. “Come with me and I’ll put the pizza in the back and quickly introduce you since Ivy just told everyone who you were.”

“Don’t you have to stay up here?” he asked.

“Yes and no. It’s finally slowed down and Ivy is filling in too. I’ll probably sneak back here and get some orders done before I leave unless they need me upfront.”

She grabbed a slice of pizza and put it on a plate. “You’re going to eat it out there?” he asked.

“I am,” she said. “I’m starving and can eat fast. We’ll go over by the jewelry case though where there aren’t as many people.”

“I’m glad I got to see you,” he said.

He leaned in and took a bite of her pizza. “That was cute,” she said. “You must miss me a lot for this. Did you have a long day?”

“It was fine until my mother called and left me a message in regards to my girlfriend that everyone knew about and met but her.”

“Ahhh,” she said, smirking at him. “Bad boy. Bet you’re on the shit list.”

“I am. She wants to meet you. I got the guilt trip.”

Her smile fell. “I suppose that is only fair. Is she coming to town soon?”

He laughed. “I told her that. She won’t do it. I said then it’d be after the holidays. Which of course meant she was upset that I wouldn’t be spending the holidays with her. I said I didn’t know what I was doing yet. That we’d talk.”

“I haven’t thought much about it,” she said. “I don’t think I’ll see my mother. I guess she’s still with Charlie, but things are cooling some. She has to figure that out and I’m staying away right now.”

“Smart move,” he said.

“I’m not a whiz kid, but I know when to step back from things.” She took another bite of her pizza and held it to him and then yanked it back. “Crap.”
