“Jill,” Max said. “Let it go. We’ll be here a few more days and we’ll play it by ear. I think it might be best if Heather stays. Let’s just get through the next day or so.”

She could see she was getting through to the men in the family.

“I’m going to go check on Heather. It’s been too long. She might need me,” Jill said.

Daisy knew enough to bite her tongue and turned to the men that she could see over in the living room. “Can I get you guys anything else? The salads will be done soon. I thought I’d make some steak sandwiches tonight unless you’d rather have deli sandwiches. Heather loves the way I make them and pop them in the oven and let the cheese get all melted on top.”

“Do you have peppers and onions with them?” Gavin asked. “That’s the best.”

“I do,” she said. “I cooked them earlier today and just need to heat it up.”

“Shit,” Noah said. “If Heather doesn’t want to stay here, I will. Don’t worry, Daisy, Heather’s not going anywhere. You can relax a bit.”

Guess she wasn’t doing that good of a job hiding how anxious she was over this. If Heather went home maybe she wouldn’t feel like she could come back.

No, she couldn’t think that way. It wouldn’t happen. It had more to do with not wanting Heather to have to deal with the things she had in the past with her mother.

That pact they had to be there for each other and not let anything knock them down again.

“Noah is right,” Heather’s father said. “I’ll make sure Jill lets up. But in the meantime, I’m looking forward to this dinner too. Thank you again for everything you are doing.”

“You’re welcome,” she said. “Heather means the world to me.” Gavin lifted his eyebrow up at her and she flushed. “Not like that.”

Gavin burst out laughing, and Noah joined in. Heather’s father didn’t seem to get the joke.

Trying Too Hard

Amonth later, Daisy returned to her apartment with Heather.

Yesterday Heather and Luke had gone to a party together at their boss’s house to celebrate a coworker’s engagement. Violet Soren had gotten engaged to Trace Mancini.

The accident seemed to put some spark into Luke and Heather’s relationship and they went from a one-night stand and waiting for Luke to finish training to dating strong these past several weeks. It might have taken half a year to get here, but if it was her, she’d take it and was excited for her best friend.

She found it all sweet, the way Luke was trying to take it slow, but she also knew Heather was getting frustrated and she was thrilled her best buddy got some action last night and stayed at Luke’s house.

She was jealous, no doubt there, but the fact that tough guy Luke just treated her to the movies and fudge for taking such good care of his girlfriend might have been the best thing she’d ever experienced from a man in her life.

Why couldn’t she find someone that caring in her life?

“That was so much fun,” Daisy said. “Thank you for including me on your date. I know you don’t see much of Luke, so you didn’t need to do it.”

“I thought it was super sweet of him to ask you to go. You’ve been doing so much for me. I can’t thank you enough.”

She waved her hand. “Please. You’d do it for me and you know it.”

“I would,” Heather said.

“And you got lucky last night. Finally,” Daisy said, wiggling her eyebrows. She got up and did a little hip grind too. She had to and knew Heather would get a good laugh out of it. It’d been a long time since her hips had moved in that direction. Which was sad but life.

“I think I had to all but twist his arm. I put him on the spot. Part of me feels horrible about that and the other part knew it had to be done.”

“So what was his problem?” she asked. “Was he afraid of hurting you as you thought?”

“Yes,” Heather said. “But he was fine once I showed himIwas fine.”

“Good,” she said. “Now I can be jealous of your relationship. Because, you know, you’ve got a boyfriend and all.”
