She talked to her mother a few times a week but not as much and she was fine with it.

More than fine other than it just felt like Daisy was alone more than normal.

Maybe it was hormones with her too.

“That’s sweet,” she said. “I never want to overstep myself with you or the business. But sometimes things just come to me and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to teach me what you know and how to do things. Letting me grow and try new ideas too. Some of them have been flops.”

Rose grinned. “Not flops, just not sustainable in jewelry.”

Which she knew. Just because she had an idea didn’t mean it met with the style of the pieces that were being produced all the time here.

“I know. And I don’t want you to worry when you’re out on leave. We are going to get this big holiday order done in the next week or so. And the pieces for your charity line will be done by the end of September.”

Years ago they’d created the Holly Bloom Foundation and those items were released before the holidays and sold the most then. Production would wrap up for them in January and what was left was sold until the next year's design came out.

She’d been thrilled one of her ideas for a long boho stainless steel chain with a large resin holly flower was approved by the sisters. It was a lower end price and a piece that could be made at the manufacturing plant and assembled rather quickly.

The wholesalers loved it and it sold more than any other piece.

No, the profit margins weren’t the same, but the power of success she felt had been greater.

“There are hits and misses in everything in life,” Daisy said. “And if you don’t get out of here soon, then Lily is going to come down and give you a hard time. I can see in your eyes you feel ill again.”

Rose grabbed her ice cold water and took a sip. “I can’t figure it out. No matter what I do it creeps up on me at the oddest of times. It makes no sense what triggers it either.”

“My mother said she was the same way with me. I’ve heard it enough. She was sick the whole time.”

Which of course made it hard to hide that last month of high school when no one was supposed to even know her mother was pregnant.

Penny had missed a lot of school or went in late. She’d get up from class to go to the bathroom, throw up and then go back to finish up until the bell rang for the next class.

She supposed her mother told her those things to scare her silly into not making the same mistakes.

“That doesn’t make me feel any better,” Rose said. “But at least I’ve only got about six more weeks or so.”

Daisy looked at her watch and saw it was six thirty. She should have been done with her shift thirty minutes ago, but she’d gotten held up with a customer and would never walk away.

“How about this to make you feel better?” she asked. “I’d thought you left so I didn’t come get you, but I was just talking to a woman that ordered custom-made necklaces for her bridal party.”

“Really?” Rose said. “One of the pieces in the case and just changing out the stones or something completely new?”

“The rose necklace,” she said. “The one with the rose in the middle on the sterling silver chain. They want an emerald stone in the center and wanted to know how much it’d cost.”

That necklace didn’t have a stone in it, so though the necklace existed, they would have to tweak it.

“We can do that,” Rose said. “How many does she need?”

“Five bridesmaids and two for the mothers. The bride wants something else and that took longer to figure it out too. I’ve got it all down in my notes and told her I’d get her a price in a day or so. She didn’t seem to care much about money.”

She could see the wealth on the woman a mile away. She didn’t need to notice the three carat diamond ring either.

“If she didn’t care, she’d go for white gold,” Rose said, laughing.

The sterling silver necklaces sold for over a hundred apiece as it was. With a gemstone much more. It was still a lot of money for her to give as gifts for a bridal party.

“Her necklace she wants to be white gold with a diamond in it.”

“Oh,” Rose said, rubbing her hands together. “There’s the money.”
