“First off, you’ve only been doing it for two years. But you said you got to pick your own discipline. So though you always knew you’d be a doctor, you picked what appealed to you. If you didn’t like it, my guess is you could have changed easily and still been ahead of other doctors to start practicing.”

“That’s true,” he said. “I do love it.”

“And second of all, you didn’t have to do what you did for Heather’s accident. You could have walked away on your day off and let the EMTs deal with it. You said you weren’t even on call that day and someone else could have handled it. But you didn’t. On your rare day off, you still put a patient first. That is a love for something.”

Again, something he never thought of. “I didn’t think. I just did what I was trained to do.”

“I know. I’m just saying, that being trained and being good at your job is one thing. Loving it is another. When you love something, there is a passion there for you to do more. To do better.”

“You’re pretty wise,” he said.

She giggled and it was louder than they’d been talking. “I don’t hear that often but I’m glad I heard it from you.”

Every once in a while she’d let something like that slip. An insecurity she had about being with him. He didn’t want her to feel that way.

“What’s Heather’s schedule like with Luke this week?” he asked. “I’ll try to work around it if you’re good with a late dinner?”

“I’ll find out for sure,” she said. “But Luke is on nights and he started Sunday. So his last shift is Wednesday night. My guess is Heather will spend the weekend with Luke, definitely Friday and Saturday.”

“Then I’d like to plan on a date Friday and Saturday if you’re available.”

“I’ve got to work some on Saturday, but that night, I’m all yours.”

He’d never had a woman say that to him before and he found he liked it.

“I’m looking forward to it.”

Risk Factor

“This is the first comedy show I’ve been to,” Theo told Daisy two weeks later when they were walking into Mohegan Sun casino.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m not surprised,” she said.

“Why is that?” he asked.

He was looking pretty hot to her right now. He had on dark jeans, a button-down shirt, dressy sneakers that she supposed were more like shoes. Normally when they went out he was more casual in his attire. Still jeans but not dressier shirts like one he’d wear to work.

The only other way she’d seen him was dressed for work when she went with Heather. This was a nice combination of the two.

She wanted to dress up a bit for him and hadn’t had the opportunity until tonight.

Not that she thought what she wore was very dressy, but she was having fun with the black jumpsuit and red heels. She had one of Poppy’s signature poppy scarfs on but around her waist more like a bright belt, with matching earrings. A few long silver necklaces in layers and a bold amethyst ring on her middle finger that she’d made years ago.

“You’re just too serious. You’ve told me that yourself. And you’ve been working so hard and long that we haven’t seen much of each other. Tonight can be about laughing and having fun.”

“You’re working just as much,” he pointed out.

He put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer to his side. She liked that it was still warm enough out that they didn’t need a jacket and he could get the full effect of her outfit. He had whistled when she went to his place.

She was feeling bad about their lack of time too and always going to his house. That she hadn’t had him to her place yet, not even to pick her up. But she didn’t want Heather to come back and wonder why her car was there but she wasn’t.

She’d have to figure things out soon, but she was enjoying keeping Theo to herself without anyone asking questions or bugging her. She hoped that wasn’t what made her enjoy Theo so much, that it was this secret to build the excitement.

No, that hadn’t been her before. She didn’t want to think she was that type of person either.

No one other than Poppy, who was too busy with work to pay too much attention to her right now, knew she was dating anyone.
