They didn’t end up seeing much of each other last weekend because she had to work and then Theo ended up covering for someone on Saturday night. He’d hoped he wouldn’t get called in, but had. Heather had been home on Friday night because Luke was working overtime and then Heather was home on Sunday because Luke had plans to help Zane with something in the afternoon. So she had a quick brunch with Theo before Heather got home, went and got groceries and was pulling into the parking lot at the same time as her best friend.

It’d been about a month now that she’d been dating Theo. More like five weeks. That was still new in her eyes, considering they didn’t see much of each other.

It would be safe to say something now, but then she still wasn’t positive either. She didn’t want to be the loser that couldn’t hold onto someone that long.

“Daisy,” she heard and turned her head.

Of all the rotten luck. “Ryan,” she said.

“How have you been?” Ryan asked her. There was an example of not holding onto someone for long.

She’d thought Ryan was a good catch and they got along great until he started to act like a prick frat boy on New Year’s Eve. She wasn’t into that childishness or the petty way they talked and treated people.

Not the way he insinuated that she’d had sex with him to his buddies when they hadn’t.

She broke up with him after that party and he seemed to act like it wasn’t that big of a deal. Didn’t even ask why and she moved on.

Everyone knew she’d gone out with Ryan and she felt like an idiot saying once again that she’d broken up with him. She started to feel like she was the picky one when it was just she attracted assholes.

She wasn’t sure why Ryan had to come over and say something to her now when she was on a date. But he wasn’t alone either. He had two of his buddies with him that she was positive were at the party that night.

Maybe he got egged on to come say something and save face.

“Good,” she said. “And you?”

“Perfectly fine,” he said. “Are you going to introduce me?”

She sighed. “Theo James, this is Ryan Patrick. We dated briefly last year.”

“A month or so,” Ryan said. “She’s a good time but not much more. Don’t get your hopes up.”

Ryan left after that and she felt her face flush with embarrassment.

“What a prick,” Theo said. “If I wasn’t worried about my hands I’d bust his face.”

She looked at him and saw how serious he was. For once she was thrilled to see it. “Thanks. Not many stick up for me. And it’s not what you think.”

“The show is starting. Don’t worry about it.”

But she did worry about it for the next ninety minutes.

She laughed at the jokes and how people were picked out of the crowd, but she couldn’t get the interaction with Ryan out of her head.

When they were driving back to his place, she wanted to explain. “About Ryan,” she said.

“We all have asshole exes,” he said.

“He wasn’t really an ex,” she said. “I consider an ex someone that I’ve at least slept with and I didn’t. He wanted you to believe that and it’s not the case. That’s the problem. That was the problem with us and why I broke things off.”

He turned to glance at her while he was driving. “What happened?”

“We had a few dates. He was a nice guy. It was only a couple of weeks and I thought we got along well, but I don’t jump into bed with people fast. I’ve been here two years and you are only the second person I’ve slept with in that time.”

“Oh,” he said.

“See, you thought it was more. I’m over people judging me by how I look or maybe act. I like to have fun, but that doesn’t mean I’m a whore.”

She felt her eyes fill.
