“What is so funny?” she asked.

“It’s hard to explain. It’s not like we are close to my father either, but he understands us more. I know my mother means well, but her way isn’t the best. She rubs people the wrong way.”

“Seems like our mothers are as opposite as we are,” she said.

He pulled her into his arms. “But we are opposites in a good way.”

“We are,” she said. “And I’m going to keep reminding myself of that.”

Her Own Skin

“You’re home early,” Heather said to her on Sunday morning.

It was ten and though she wanted to spend the day with Theo, Daisy knew he had work to do and she had a relationship to repair.

He understood and that was more than enough for her.

“I wanted to talk to you,” she said.

“I’m sorry I acted like a child yesterday,” Heather said.

She moved to her best friend and hugged her. “I’m sorry I was an idiot. I know you were shocked. I figured that much.”

“I was angrier with the way you think of yourself,” Heather said. “But I shouldn’t have said what I did. Or I should have talked about it rather than walk away.”

“I think we both reacted poorly, but I want to explain more to you. Can we talk now?”

“I want to,” Heather said.

“I told Theo about our fight. I want you to know that. I mean, last night was the first I spent the night. I haven’t wanted to because I didn’t know when you’d be home and wonder where I was.”

“I can’t believe you’ve had this secret and I didn’t notice it. I feel horrible. It’s like I’m so wrapped up in my own life and that isn’t like me.”

“You’ve had a lot going on,” she said. “Your accident and then Luke. What happened the other night too? I know that was as hard on you as it was on him.”

Heather had told her all about how Luke had behaved. That he didn’t want her to spend the night and was trying to lock it all within himself over what happened at work. That Zane had talked to her and helped and Heather made Luke see that she could be there for him.

“It was,” Heather said. “It’s not an excuse though. I used to be there more for you and I haven’t been. I got to thinking that is why you weren’t telling me you were dating someone.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you thought it?”

“Probably the same reason you didn’t tell me you were. I figured you would in time.”

“I waited too long,” she said. “I know it.”

“And you’re going to tell me more about why, right?”

“I am. Sit,” she said. “Please.”

They both went to the couch and sat down. She looked at Heather and had to laugh at how they were dressed the same. Leggings, a long sweater, their hair in a ponytail. Funny how in the past she always tried to doll herself up when she was with a man, but with Theo, he made her comfortable in her own skin.

Considering her insecurities, that should say it all right there.

“First, do you really like him? I mean you’re sleeping with him,” Heather said. “I know you don’t sleep with many.”

“I do like him. And I think that is why I didn’t say much because I like himsomuch and feared if it went wrong it was going to hurt so much more. I still think it, but he gets me.”
