“You got lucky,” her mother said. “But I’m happy for you.”

“Thank you,” she said. “I’m happy for me too. Let me show you to my room and where you’ll be staying. I’ll stay in Heather’s room tonight.”

“I would love to have seen Heather again,” her mother said. Heather went home with Daisy once, but every other time Heather was just around when she was video chatting with her mother.

“She went to see her parents with Luke.”

“I’m sure her mother is ready to get started on wedding plans,” her mother said.

“Most likely,” she said. Her mother picked up her bag and followed her down the hall. Charlie was staying with Theo for the moment it seemed.

“This place is huge for a condo,” her mother said. “Bigger than any place I’ve had.”

“It is nice,” she said. “Heather and I have plenty of room.” She walked into her room. “I emptied a drawer for you if you want to take your stuff out. The bathroom is right next door that we passed.”

“I saw it,” her mother said. “This is a big room too. Very pretty. You always had good style. You get that from me.”

Daisy laughed. Her mother had always been basic in her attire, nothing like she was now, and she wondered what else was changing. “I’m not sure I’ve worn animal print in a while,” she said.

“I’m sure you’re wearing them under your clothes. I bet Theo is a wildcat in bed.”

“Mom,” she said. Geez, at least her mother said that in here and not in front of Theo. Not everything was changing with her mother, she could see.

“What?” her mother asked. “Friends talk like that.”

“I’m your daughter. We didn’t talk like this when I was younger and I don’t want to do it now.”

“I know you’re having sex. You know I am too.”

“I do,” she said, sighing. She wanted to tell her mother not to do it in her bed tonight but couldn’t bring herself to think it let alone voice it. She’d just wash the sheets again tomorrow like she had this morning before her mother showed up. “But that doesn’t mean I want to talk about it. I’m glad you found someone you like.”

“He’s great. Still not sure I want to move in with him, but we have a good time together.”

“He didn’t have any family to be with for the holiday?”

“No,” her mother said. “He’s ten years older than me and his parents live in Arizona.”

Looking at Charlie in person she would have guessed he was older than fifty-seven. His hair was thinning and he had a slight comb-over. He had light-colored loose jeans on and shoes...shiny shoes. It almost seemed as if he was transported out of the eighties in his appearance.

As long as he made her mother happy, that was all she was going to care about even if something felt slightly off she couldn’t put her finger on.

“I’m glad you could come for the holiday,” she said. “I would have loved to visit you, but with Rose out, I have to work tomorrow and this weekend.”

“It worked out well,” her mother said. “This lets me meet Theo. Have you two said you love each other yet?”

“We have,” she said.

Her mother put her hands on her hips and started to pout as Ivy did at times. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because it just happened today,” she said.

“Give me the details,” her mother said.

“How about another day?” she said. “Or later. Right now Theo is out there with Charlie. We should go be with them and I have to check on dinner.”

“You’re a party pooper, but it’s fine,” her mother said.

The two of them returned to the main living area. Theo had finished putting the snacks together for her.
