“What?”

“You are getting off-topic! Congrats, by the way.”

“Thanks.” She smiled brightly. “And besides, it distracted you a bit, didn’t it?”

I rapidly blinked a few times and she continued.

“Anyways, from what we could hear, he was like a ghost. His eyes were white.”

“Everyone’s eyes are white.”

“No, I mean, the irises were white. From what I could hear of Sister Anna, it’s as if all the essences were completely sucked from his body. Abbess Atiana thinks his soul may have been taken as well. It’s freaking crazy.”

“What the hell could do that?” I asked in confusion.

“Chicky, I thought you would know. After all, you're the energy leach.”

“I sure as fuck can’t do that.” I deadpanned. “And don’t call me that.”

She ignored me. “Ambassador Kingston is calling for a full-scale inquisition and has threatened to bring in a team of inquisitors. He even questioned how his guy got hurt earlier andheavilyimplied that someone at the Academy tricked him into going into the woods. Sister Elena is trying to hold him off, but we’re on lockdown.”

I blanched. Ness reached out to soothe my hand, pulling me to her and back onto the bed.

“Call Zane. See what he thinks. The guy is basically in love with you, and he’ll do whatever.”

I knew for a fact Zane didn’t love me...not that way, at least. Ogling aside, I was simply like the other crazy sister that he never actually wanted.

“And besides, Sabina will bite anyone who tries to fuck with you.” I raised my brow. “You know she will.”

Despite the severity of the situation, I grinned, pulling out my phone. 4:57. There was no way Zane would be awake at this point. With last night being two days before the full moon, he would have been busy with the shifter pups who had come of age for their transitions.

“I have to get out of here and go see him.”

“Did you not hear what I said? We’re. On. Lockdown.” She punctuated each word with a clap as if speaking to a toddler.

“I doubt they have a watchdog on our catacombs exit,” I said, moving to the chest of drawers next to my bed to pull out of a set of jeans and a black tank top.

Ness pinched her chin. “True. They’re bound to have monitors in all the halls, though.”

I shrugged. “I’ll take my chances.”

“You’re sure that you have no idea about anything weird going on?” Her seriousness caught me off guard, and I stumbled. “I mean...you usually just kinda - I don’t know - pick up on this stuff.”

Suppose there was ever a time to tell her about Marik, my Coppertone demon from the pits of...wherever the hell Sarnas was located, now would have been the time. But somehow, I knew he wasn’t involved, my gut telling me that this wouldn’t be his style. You'd know if he wanted someone dead, and he wouldn’t bother hiding the evidence.

He wouldn’t need to.

I had just started typing Zane a text when I came to a halt, bouncing against another unfortunate soul as I ducked through the corridors outside the gym that led down to the catacombs.

“Ouch!” The ashen blond woman fell back on her butt, her hair falling in tangled waves over her face. I remained upright, my slightly taller frame and bit curvier body holding the edge to hers. But it still hurt.

“Penny,” I said as I pulled her up to her feet. Penny Arison normally had bright spring green eyes, but today, they held a hint of wariness as she continuously looked over my shoulder to watch for hall monitors.

“Hey Ryn, long time no see,” She tugged at the hem of her sweater, an anxious tell I’d never noticed before. Despite having grown up together and taken many of the same classes, both being healers and all, we had never really been friends. That said, I had always held her as an acquaintance. She was sweet enough, just a bit of a flit that didn’t really fit with Ness and me.

“Are you scoping out the vote board?” I asked, my own eyes searching around us.

She nodded and ran a hand across the back of her neck. “Yeah...I got a look. I took a picture of it for the girls in my section. Want a copy? Save you the trouble of trying to sneak over there.”
